Takeaways from the election

WRITE OF CENTER

Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving, we Americans have so much to be grateful for, including our freedoms and opportunity.

Now some thoughts about the 2024 election.

Donald Trump won a solid electoral and popular vote victory. The left has expressed strong opposition to the Electoral College. Our Founding Fathers created it for many reasons, including a desire to balance power between large and small states.

The Electoral College limits large states like California and New York from overwhelming the interests of smaller states, which could result in tyranny of the majority to the detriment of the minority.

The left’s claim during the 2024 campaign to be protectors of democracy is absurd.

Attacking our system of checks and balances, the left seeks to pack the Supreme Court. For years they’ve used liberal judges to decree what they cannot pass legislatively. This doesn’t sound very democratic to me.

The left seeks to eviscerate the 2nd amendment.

The federal government has increasingly centralized power, gutting the 10th amendment, which simply says “any powers not mentioned in the Constitution as belonging to the federal government belong to the states themselves.”

The 1st amendment’s guarantee of free speech is under assault by the left, be it from the legacy media or universities that routinely repress any political view that counters their belief system.

Over 90% of legacy media journalists and college professors support leftist ideology, creating an echo chamber environment versus one which promotes critical thinking.

A family friend who teaches at a western university doesn’t express his true beliefs, for fear of jeopardizing his career. And good luck to conservatives who speak at many campuses without hiring personal security.

Such autocratic actions must end, be it on campuses, Hollywood or corporate boardrooms.

Mario Salvi, the founder of the 1960’s free speech movement at UC Berkeley, and certainly no right winger, must be turning over in his grave at the hypocrisy of today’s leftists.

When Democrat party officials in several states fought to keep Trump off their ballots, to block opponents of President Biden from being on primary ballots, then conducted a coup (after he received 99% of delegates) to eliminate him in favor of Kamala Harris, who never received a single vote, they made a mockery of our democratic system.

Yet with minimal efforts and no financial campaign commitment in massive blue states like California or New York, Trump still won the popular vote, the first Republican to do so since 2004.

Trump significantly improved his support from various groups, winning close to 50% of union members and 46% among Hispanics. Trump won every Texas border county, where over 90% of citizens are Mexican-Americans.

In his 2001 book titled The New Americans, political analyst Michael Barone compared the potential future voting patterns of the emerging Hispanic population with that of Italian immigrants, a prior large immigrant group who also started off as Democrats; several generations later and thoroughly woven into the American Dream, they now vote heavily Republican.

Both immigrant groups had similar economic and educational backgrounds, shared cultural and religious values combined with a strong entrepreneurial streak. Barone’s prophecy appears to be coming true.

Religious Americans of varying denominations overwhelmingly supported Trump. For example, in Borough Park Brooklyn, home to 150,000 Orthodox Jews, 91% of voters backed Trump, perhaps in response to the virulent anti-Semitism of the far left.

Working class Americans are shifting their support from Democrats to Republicans. Conversely, 8 of the 10 richest counties in America heavily supported Kamala Harris. Funded by left wing billionaires, Harris outspent Trump 3-1. Over 80% of D.C. metro area voters backed Harris.

Countless celebrities campaigned for Harris and threatened to leave America if Trump won. Actress Eva Longoria stated, “I’m privileged. I get to escape and go somewhere. Most Americans aren’t so lucky. They’re going to be stuck in this dystopian country.” Patriotic Americans would say to Longoria and any other celebrity ingrate: “Don’t let the door hit you on your way out and renounce your citizenship if you hate America so much.”

The GOP welcomes working Americans of all races and ethnicities as we focus on improving the lives of our citizens. We seek to be true supporters of democracy.
