A fox recently found deceased in Boerne has tested positive for rabies, city officials confirmed Nov. 14.
The animal was located near Cibolo Crossing, an area with previous reports of a fox behaving unusually.
“We urge residents to remain vigilant around local wildlife and to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their pets,” Stefanie Fisher, Animal Care Services supervisor, said. “It’s important to remember that while most animals avoid human contact, rabid animals can act unpredictably, and you should contact us if you notice strange behavior.”
Additionally, Boerne residents are asked to check their pets' rabies vaccine record to ensure their best chance of survival if they encounter wildlife.
The best way to help reduce risks of wildlife entering the yard around people’s home is to make the area less attractive to them.
Boerne ACS recommends several preventive measures residents can undertake now to reduce their risks: Feed pets inside the home or garage; Bring all pet food and water inside; If pets are fed outdoors, do not leave food out overnight to avoid drawing wildlife close to your home.
Remove clutter and debris from the yard, which could provide shelter for smaller rodents and can attract larger wildlife. Keep trash bins secured.
Residents are advised not to approach or touch any wildlife they encounter.
For any unusual animal behavior or sightings, Boerne ACS asks residents to call the Boerne Police Department non-emergency line at 830249-8645 to have an animal control or Boerne police officer dispatched.
