The Comfort Bobcats opened the 2024-25 boys basketball season at home last Friday against the Cole Cougars and played well before dropping the contest, 67-59.
Comfort is 0-1 and traveled to Knippa on Tuesday. They are back on the court Friday at Burnet.
Cole – Shaquille O’Neal’s alma mater – was up 23-15 at the end of one, but Comfort took the second quarter after doubling up the Cougars, 12-6, and was only trailing at the halftime break by a deuce, 29-27.
However, Cole pulled away in the third after outscoring the Bobcats, 26-16, to take a 55-43 lead into the final stanza.
In that fourth quarter, Comfort mounted a comeback that came up short. They outscored the Cougars, 16-12, but still lost by 8.
Jaydin Steward pace the Bobcats after tallying 15 points and made it a double-double with 12 rebounds.
Trent Berny added 13 points and Jovani Zapata netted 10 as three Comfort players were in double figures.
Jared Valadez and Jackson Dear both dropped in 6 points, Alex Padilla had 4 points and Mark Hernandez hit for 3.
Hernandez and Steward recorded 3 assists apiece and Hernandez came up with 3 steals.
