WACO – Geneva School of Boerne capped a great volleyball season last Saturday afternoon at the TAPPS 4A state tournament in Waco.
Geneva met Lubbock Christian School in Saturday’s title tilt in a battle of schools with Eagle mascots and the Eagles from Lubbock defeated the Eagles from Boerne in straight sets, 25-20, 25-18, 26-24.
Despite getting swept, Eagles coach Tami Owens said she was proud of how her girls fought this year and added that it was part of what helped them get to state.
“These girls continually found ways to come back and win big district games, they knew how to do hard things,” she said. “Our tournament season consisted of playing big teams and preparing them for a good playoff run. This taught them not to get down on themselves but to dig deep, compete and find a way to win.
“They are fierce competitors, which made it fun to coach them,” she added.
Geneva finishes its season at 19-8 and was making its ninth appearance at the TAPPS state volleyball tournament and first since 2019.
Geneva has won two state titles in its rich sports history (2010, 2011) but it didn’t happen Saturday as the Lubbock School dominated for most of the match.
LCS never trailed in the first set and went up by as many as five points on six different occasions.
Geneva tied it once at 18-18, but never held the lead as Lubbock went on to take the first set, 25-20.
Geneva was also playing catch-up in the second game. Lubbock Christian pulled ahead 12-8, but Geneva rallied and tied it at 15-15. GSB scored the next point and took a 16-15 edge, the first time they held the lead in the entire match at that point.
Geneva’s last lead in the set came at 18-17 and from there, LCS went on a 4-0 spurt to pull ahead 21-18, forcing a timeout by Eagles coach Tami Owens.
It didn’t work as Lubbock Christian closed it out with the final 4 points to make it a 8-0 run to end the set and take a 2-0 match lead.
Things were much tighter in the third set and Geneva kept it close and even held a slim lead on a few occasions.
With the game tied at 16-apiece, LCS went on a 4-1 run and took a 20-17 advantage, but Geneva tied it at 20-20 and 22-22.
A 2-0 spurt put the Lubbock school up 24-22, but Geneva rallied to tie it once again at 24-24.
From there it was all Lubbock Christian as they posted the final two points to complete the sweep and claim this year’s state title.
Four Geneva players were named to the all-tournament team and they were Emerson Myrick, Ella Owens, Kate Friesenhahn and Lily Flora.
Seniors this year are Flora, Friesenhahn and Chloe Caulfield.
