THE BOOKWORM
Have you ever met a person through a book, and you were sorry you didn’t get the chance to meet them in real life?
This is how I felt upon reading “I Know About a Thousand Things: The Writings of Ann Alejandro of Uvalde, Texas.” Ann Alejandro passed away in 2019, and her good friends Naomi Shihab Nye and Marion Winik were determined to bring her writings to the world.
They have done so beautifully in this new book published by Texas A&M University Press. Nye and Winik pulled together Alejandro’s poetry, letters, and other writings to present a portrait of a woman very connected to her faith, family, and the land.
Included in the book are photos of Alejandro and her family, and paintings by Winik. If you like reading poetry and thoughts on nature and surviving adversity, you will enjoy this book.
Local author Shawna Holly has released a new novel “When We’re Broken.” This is the second book in her “Women of Asher” series, the first being “The Stories We Keep.”
Holly’s books include multi-generational stories and are filled with characters that face challenging lives. They are well-written and will keep you glued to the page. “I Know About a Thousand Things” and “When We’re Broken” will be cataloged and available to read through the library very soon.
Alice Hoffmann’s latest is a departure from the usual adult audience she writes for. This novel is from a traditional children’s book publisher, Scholastic, and it’s written for grades 3 and up. “When We Flew Away: A Novel of Anne Frank Before the Diary,” imagines the life of Anne Frank before her family went into hiding. This book is based on extensive research and published with the cooperation of the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.
You can find this book cataloged in the juvenile section of the library, but adults and young adults will enjoy it as well.
