LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Domestic abuse reality

Editor, We have recently been deluged with ads from candidates warning us of the dangers that exist in our current society. But the most dangerous place for women is in their own homes.

Domestic and intimate partner violence is entrenched and increasing. Half of female homicide victims are killed by a former or current intimate partner; most by firearms. It is a leading cause of homelessness and is associated with over half of mass shootings.

Female military veterans are more likely than non veterans to be victims of assault. Domestic violence is one of the leading causes of death for black and native American women, and a third of Hispanic women have been assaulted. Over half of assault victims have been strangled, and traumatic brain injuries are on the rise for Native American women in particular.

If you don’t think it is a problem here in Boerne, think again. The Kendall County Women’s shelter served 282 clients in 2023 and our neighbor Bexar County has the third highest rate in the state. Costs associated with injuries, loss of work and the criminal justice system for American women is in the trillions of dollars.

Suzanne Simpson’s daughter recently posted on Instagram a heartbreaking clarion call for the society she believes ignored the domestic violence crisis and allowed her father to kill her mother in a controlling and narcissistic rage. Please answer her call by contacting your state and federal representatives, and let this real danger take precedence in your life and the lives of the women you care about.
