When Boerne High defeated Corpus Christi Carroll Thursday night at Boerne ISD Stadium in the first round of the 5A DII playoffs, the 2024 Greyhounds etched their way into the school record books.
Boerne High had never hosted a playoff game in its 100-year history, so Thursday’s 39-21 win over the Tigers was a century in the making.
BHS coach Che Hendrix said it was great to open the postseason in the friendly confines of BISD Stadium.
“We love playing at home, we have a great crowd and have great energy,” he said. “Getting to play at home is a dream come true. I’m so proud that we got to host it and we came out and did what we needed to do and played a great football game.”
Boerne improves to 8-3 overall and plays the winner of the Edcouch-Elsa and Mission Veterans Memorial contest, likely Thursday in Laredo. Be sure to check the Boerne Star for complete second- round info.
The Hounds scored on their opening drive after Brooks Perez hauled in a 45-yard pass from Hank Hendrix and the Greyhounds were up 7-0 less than four minutes in.
Even though the Tigers punted on its first three drives and didn’t record a first down until the second quarter, Boerne was only up 7-0. In other words, the Greyhounds were dominating the game, but it wasn’t showing on the scoreboard.
“They do a good job of defensively jumping from a 3-man front to a 4-man front and they were confusing us a little up front,” Coach Hendrix said. “Once we got that sorted out, we started playing really well and I was proud of our guys for executing and staying with it.”
Jaxon Baize helped jumpstart the offense after he recovered a Tigers fumble at the Carroll 34. Four plays later, Walker Hill snagged a Hendrix touchdown pass on a 4th and 12 and it was 14-0.
The Tigers’ Charles Marth did return the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, but the Greyhounds answered with the final 10 points of the period.
After the Carroll TD, Eli Nikolas brought in Hendrix’s third touchdown pass of the night on a 38-yard toss to cap a 91-yard drive.
The Tigers blocked the extra point but Ben Bays picked up the block and ran it in for two points to make it 22-7.
From there, Boerne closed out the half with a 28-yard Diego Jimenez field goal to take a 25-7 lead into halftime.
The halftime break didn’t slow down the Greyhounds at all. BHS received the second-half kickoff and marched 62 yards down the field. Hutson Hendrix punched it in on a 2-yard run and the Greyhounds extended the lead to 32-7.
Boerne’s next drive ended with a Jeff Morrison 3-yard run into the end zone and basically put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter at 39-7 after the Jiminez PAT.
One thing Boerne did well in that second half was drain the clock. Their two drives out of the halftime break consumed 10:36, basically an entire quarter.
“We started making first downs and were pretty methodical,” Coach Hendrix said.
Another thing Boerne did well Thursday was to overcome holding penalties. They had two TDs negated by holding calls but they were able to eventually score on those drives.
“We don’t want to be behind the chains, that’s a point of emphasis,” the coach said. “We got a couple of holds and were able to overcome that.”
Boerne started moving players in and out and the Tigers were able to tack on two fourth- quarter touchdowns that made the game seem closer than it really was.
Robert Muhammad ran the rock into the end zone for Carroll twice in the fourth to end the scoring.
NOTES: After the game two BHS players were recognized on the all-time Greyhound list. Offensively, Brooks Perez was recognized as the school’s all-time receiver in total yards, and defensively, Hutson Hendrix was recognized as the school’s all-time leading tackler.
