Geneva School of Boerne (6-4, 3-2) accomplished a couple of key things with last Friday’s 63-0 victory at Corpus Christi John Paul II.

First, the Eagles secured a home playoff game and secondly, Geneva has locked up back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since the 2018-19 seasons.

As far as the first part, the Eagles host Pantego Christian Friday at 6 p.m., to open the TAPPS playoffs and the Boerne Star will be there.

Pantego Christian had a strong start to the 2024 season and began the year at 6-0 after going 5-0 through non-district and then winning its district opener against Trinity Christian.

After that, Pantego dropped three straight and finished district at 1-3 but their win against Trinity Christian was enough to get them into the playoffs.

The Panthers enter the postseason with an overall record of 6-3.

Geneva coach Grant Gaston said the Panthers’ offense, especially their quarterback Tristan Brown, pose a lot of problems for a defense.

“Pantego has a very good running quarterback and they utilize a variety of unique formations to run out of,” he said. “They are a real challenge for a defense.”

Brown has run for 837 yards and has tallied 22 touchdowns for the team.

Geneva does most of its damage through the air as was the case Friday in Corpus Christi after Bryce Hanover tossed 5 TD passes on 10 of 13 passing for 139 yards.

Brady Chandler and Luke Brunsvold both caught 2 TD passes and Noah Brunsvold hauled in a touchdown catch.

The Eagles ground game tallied 143 yards in the game and was led by freshman Shae McNew who only carried the ball twice but racked up 67 yards and a score.

Geneva added three special teams/defensive touchdowns after Chandler intercepted a pass and also returned a punt and scored on both, while another freshman, Jace Clark, also had a Pick-6 to add to the score.

One thing Gaston said that stood out to him this year is how the younger players have helped out because of injuries.

“I’m super proud of how our sophomores and freshmen stepped up to fill in the gaps this year and really earned their stripes in the fire,” he said. “We worked through a rash of injuries and illnesses all year long that often left us as the smallest and/or youngest team on the field. Even so, we fought and finished with a winning record and we are poised to give our best efforts during the playoffs.”

As far as putting together the first consecutive winning seasons since the 2018-19 school years, Gaston said that was the first thing he talked to the squad about after last Friday’s win in Corpus Christi.

“I congratulated our team on their resiliency and let them know they should be proud of the fact that Geneva has had back-to-back winning years for the first time since the 2018-2019 seasons,” he said. “Now, it’s time to get back to work.”
