Write Of Center: Shouting for change

Dear readers, I’m writing this column just before Election Day. It will be published after Election Day, due to publication schedule. So, I will not have any comments on the election outcome, which none of us know as of this writing. See y’all on the other side!

It’s been a long vibrant campaign. I have been involved in Republican politics for the past 52 years, and have never seen such high energy among our GOP voters.

Our volunteers greet early voters arriving at the Elections Office. We see the resolve and determination of thousands of Kendall County Republican voters. Their faces and eyes say it all.

Their shouts are “Save Our Country,” “Fight, Fight, Fight,” “Make America Great Again.”

We connect with many passing motorists. It’s amazing, it seems that every big rig, pickup, tow truck, or delivery truck driver is a Trump supporter. The air horns are honking in support; one big rig laid on his horn for half a block! Thumbs up, raised fist, shouts of encouragement.

And at the same time, I have heard hundreds of our Republican voters express their fear for America. And these are people who don’t scare easily. But they have reason to be scared. They look at the damage from the past four years and worry that America cannot withstand four more years of the same.

The people have seen the idiotic policies coming out of Washington. They see inflation at the grocery store, after the administration spent trillions of dollars on climate programs. Incredibly, Congress named that blowout spending bill “The Inflation Reduction Act” and passed it without any Republican votes.

The people have been told that somehow a border wall is immoral, that America owes the rest of the world shelter, food and medical care. They see open borders, allowing criminals and terrorists to enter America. They see human trafficking, drug trade and criminal gangs from south of the Texas border raging through the American heartland.

The people have watched America’s reputation be shamed by the disastrous surrender to the enemy in Afghanistan, leaving behind $80 billion worth of military equipment and desperate refugees falling off cargo jets.

They have seen an empty suit in the White House for the past three and a half years, covered up by the deceit of his staff and others yet unknown. And when the truth of Biden’s health was finally exposed, his nomination was given to someone without any electoral process. An empty pantsuit.

But our great Kendall County Republican voters didn’t give up. They didn’t back down, they didn’t give in. Many, many of them weren’t shouting or gesturing, they were simply exercising their right to vote. And each vote counted the same, no matter who cast it.

Kendall County is renowned for being the highest turnout county in the entire state of Texas, and a deep-red Republican county as well. That’s what makes it such a wonderful place to live.

Yet, these patriotic Americans were targets of a demonization effort, being called a “threat to democracy.” Shame on our opponents who peddled those vacuous words.

My fellow veterans are especially offended by those attacks on our patriotism. After all, we put our lives on the line to protect that very democracy.

And now, on top of calling us “neanderthals,” Biden recently called us “garbage.” Incredibly, the president of the United States called millions of American citizens “garbage.” Disgusting, ugly words.

On Election Day in Kendall County, voters will have shouted a thunderous message about what they do not want. Republicans do not want another two states added to America as our opponents have proposed. We do not want to abolish the electoral college as our opponents have proposed. We do not want to abolish the Senate filibuster as our opponents have propose. We do not want the Supreme Court packed with 15 justices as our opponents have proposed.

And now, after all the speeches, advertisements, mailers, phone calls and texts, our voters have had the last word. God bless them, every one. And what our Kendall County Republican voters do want is freedom, economic growth without government domination, and opportunity for every American.

Republicans belong to the party of freedom, not free stuff.

Scott S. Kramer is former Chairman of the Kendall County Republican Party.
