It had been 17 years since the Boerne High football team last played Kerrville Tivy in the regular season and in their first meeting since 2007, the Greyhounds dominated their Hill Country rivals Friday night at Boerne ISD Stadium.

Boerne High jumped out to a 35-0 lead before the Antlers could catch their breath. From there the Greyhounds cruised to a 49-21 victory.

By virtue of Friday’s win, the Greyhounds finish second in District 13-5A DII and get to host a first-round playoff game.

Boerne High (7-3, 5-1) welcomes Corpus Christi Carroll Thursday at 7 p.m. to Boerne ISD Stadium.

As far any anybody knows, the Greyhounds have never hosted a playoff game in their 100-year football history.

BHS coach Che Hendrix said they talked about finishing second (behind Alamo Heights) and getting to host a postseason contest.

“We’re looking forward to it. After that loss to Alamo Heights we regrouped and played really good football,” he said. “One of the carrots we’ve been dangling is to host a playoff game. You finish second and you get to host a game, it’s one of the advantages of moving to 5A.”

After that Alamo Heights loss, the Greyhounds have responded by scoring 49, 50, 49, 50 and 49 points in their last five games.

“Our guys are playing at a high level and we’re executing in all three phases and we’re peaking at the right time I feel like,” Hendrix said. “We want to keep this momentum going and keep this energy going.”

Jeff Morrison ran in Boerne’s first score and then on their next drive, Zach Freasier hauled in a 27-yard pass from Hank Hendrix, and it was 14-0 in the first.

On Kerrville’s ensuing possession, Townes Oviedo lived a defensive lineman’s dream. An attempted pass from the Tivy QB slipped out of his grip and landed in Oviedo’s hands. The defensive lineman snagged the errant throw and returned it 45 yards for a Pick-6 touchdown.

Coach Hendrix said he had some fun with Oviedo when he came to the sideline.

“I told him he looked fast running down the sideline and then I told him ‘just kidding,’” the coach said. “But what a cool deal for him, his senior year getting to make a play like that, he was on cloud nine. You talk about a smile from ear to ear, it was cool to see.”

Oviedo’s touchdown helped Boerne close out the first quarter with a 21-0 lead after the Diego Jimenez extra point.

In the second quarter, Brooks Perez helped the Greyhounds get down the field quickly with catches of 36 and 33 yards. From there, Adam Hicks punched it in from the 2-yard line and BHS bumped its lead to 28-0.

Tivy’s next possession ended with another turnover after Ben Bays stripped the Antlers quarterback and Hutson Hendrix jumped on the loose ball.

And it didn’t take the Greyhounds long to capitalize after Hank Hendrix connected with Hutson Hendrix on a 24-yard scoring strike and the lead was 35-0.

Coach Hendrix said they started to change things up at that point.

“We backed off a little bit and they made some plays and scored some points and we knew they would,” he said. “They’re a good team, they’ve scored all year, but as far as how we played, I was really proud.”

Right before the half, Tivy’s President Calamaco hauled in the first of his three touchdown passes for the Antlers to get them on the board and to give BHS a 35-7 advantage by halftime.

After the break, both teams scored on their first possessions. Brooks Perez made an impressive overthe- should grab on a throw from Hank Hendrix and bumped the lead to 42-7.

Tivy answered right away after Calamaco hauled in a 38-yard TD pass from Seth Shuler to make it 42-7. Calamaco added his third score of the night in the fourth quarter on another strike from Shuler, while Ivan Perez capped the Boerne scoring with an 18-yard sprint into the end zone early in the fourth quarter to cap a 10-play, 88-yard drive.
