ROUND ROCK – The Boerne Champion boys cross country team raced at last weekend’s state meet and placed fifth in the 5A race and had one runner just miss out on a top-3 finish.

Charlie Houck posted a 15:41.9 and placed fourth, just two seconds behind the bronze medalist, Miles Westbrook from El Paso High, who ran a 15:39.20.

Houck’s top-four finish helped the boys team tally 185 points for fifth.

Lucas Lovejoy (77), Boerne High (137) and Frisco Wakeland (153) took the top three team spots, while Grapevine (174) was fourth, followed by the Chargers.

Houck missed a medal by about two seconds, but wasn’t sweating it. As it is, by placing in the top 10, he was named all-state.

“The goal was top 10, rankings didn’t have me in the top 10 but I knew I had it in me,” he said. “I always progress well throughout the season, so it’s a great feeling. I’m perfectly happy with it.”

Chargers coach Sheila West said Houck ran a great race and enjoyed working with him this fall.

“He’s one of those that leads by example, he’s not a real vocal leader, but he’s always there putting in the work and being positive with his teammates,” she said. “He’s been a lot of fun to coach. I’m very proud of him for being in the top 5.”

Luis Tovar was 16th, but came in seventh in adjusted scoring when runners not on a team are removed from the team scoring.

Tovar posted a 16:02.1, Caleb Dehart came in 43rd with a 16:47.6, Shawn Edwards completed in the course with a time of 16:50.5 for 47th and Mason Nelson was 86th after clocking a 17:32.1.

Noah Moreno placed 90th after running a 17:35.2 and Brandon Martinez turned in an 18:41.1 for 108th.

Coach West said it was a great year. “I was hoping we would place higher, we’re capable of it, but I’m still very proud of their effort,” she said.

Champion’s Charlie Houck made it to the podium with a top-10 finish after he was fourth and missed out on a bronze medal by about two seconds.
