ROUND ROCK – It turns out the step up from 4A to 5A wasn’t a big leap at all for the Boerne High boys cross country team.

After earning bronze at last year’s 4A meet, the Boerne boys moved up to 5A this year but didn’t skip a beat after they finished second in their new classification at this year’s state meet.

BHS coach Chris Carter said they believed in themselves and weren’t worried about stepping up to 5A.

“I credit the boys, when we made the move up, there was no talk about just making it to state or just making it to regionals, it was, ‘get back on the podium.’ They’ve had that attitude from the very beginning, that’s just the way it’s been,” he said. “They made the transition up to 5A and never lost how good we can be and we ignored everybody else and focused on us.”

One thing the Greyhounds did well on their way to silver medals in Saturday’s race in Round Rock at Old Settlers Park was to run as a pack.

In the final team standings, Boerne’s scoring five finished 12-13-15-17-80.

“We talked from the beginning; we live and die on the strength of the entire team,” Carter said. “It’s fun to win individually, but when everybody has a medal on their neck, it makes the bus ride home a little better.”

Aaron Garcia led the team after he finished 12th in the adjusted scoring where individual runners not on a team are removed from the team scoring.

Garcia posted a 16:16.6, Valor Menn came in one spot back in 13th at 16:17.1, Barrett Crofut finished 15th in 16:18.9 and Carsten Bain posted a 16:25.3 for 17th to have four BHS runners finish just six spots and 9 seconds apart.

Jackson Temple was Boerne’s fifth runner and placed 80th with a time of 17:23.7, Ethan Christianson recorded an 18:13.2 for 107th and Ben Macias finished three spots back with an 18:34.5 for 110th.

Another thing the BHS boys did well this year was to peak at the right time. After finishing second at district (to Boerne Champion), the Greyhounds beat the Chargers at regionals and beat them again at state after they took second.

“Sometimes it’s not the fastest, it’s the healthiest team and I think the boys bought into the plan and that is to have good legs at the end of the season and it worked out well,” he said. “I’m just really excited for the boys, just really happy for them.”
