ROUND ROCK — Boerne Champion finished with an individual state champion, while the Boerne High boys earned silver in the team competition at Saturday’s 5A state cross country meet in Round Rock.
The Champion boys were also entered in the meet and had an individual runner just miss out on a state medal, while the Lady Chargers had a top-7 finish in the team standings and Comfort was represented by one runner, who set a PR in the 3A girls race.

Champion’s Elizabeth Leachman defended her 5A individual title at Old Settlers Park Saturday morning and overcame a lot just to make it back to state.
In fact, Leachman didn’t even finish her race at regionals but since the team qualified, the junior was able to compete at state.
Leachman posted a time of 17:14.80 last Saturday to earn her fifth state championship in either cross country or track.
Leachman came into the season with an injury, suffered another injury after a collision with a teammate during workouts, battled stomach flu and strep throat but overcame it all to defend her title.
“I didn’t know what the outcome was going to be, I don’t think I was ever so unsure going into a race,” she said. “It’s been a whirlwind of a season and I didn’t know if I was going to finish first or 150th.”
The Lady Chargers were seventh in the final team standings with 92 points.
Boerne High boys
The Boerne High boys jumped to 5A this year but didn’t miss a beat. After finishing third at state last year as a 4A team, the Greyhounds moved up to 5A and claimed silver medals on Saturday.
It was a textbook case of pack running as the Greyhounds scoring-five runners finished 12-13-15-17-80 with 137 points for silver medals.
“It’s fun to win individually, but when everybody has a medal on their neck, it makes the bus ride home a little better,” BHS coach Chris Carter said.
Champion boys
Charger Charlie Houck almost turned in a top-three finish after he was fourth in the 5A boys race.
Houck posted a time of 15:41.9 for fourth overall and was just over two seconds behind the bronze medalist Miles Westbrook of El Paso High, who ran a 15:39.2.
Houck said he would have loved to medal but as it is, his top-10 finish makes him a 5AAll-State runner and the senior said he’s fine with how the race went.
“The goal was top 10, rankings didn’t have me in the top 10 but I knew I had it in me,” he said. “I always progress well throughout the season, so it’s a great feeling. I’m perfectly happy with it.”
Champion finished fifth in the final team standings with 108 points.
Comfort High
The Comfort girls also had one runner compete in the 3A race Saturday morning and Ella Thiele placed 34th with a PR time of 12:30.3.
