100 years of Boerne Greyhound football
In honor of the Boerne Greyhounds celebrating 100 years of football in 2024, the Boerne Star will go back through its archives and publish something in every weekend’s issue during the regular season relating to the Boerne High football team from over the years.
With Boerne Champion set to open in the fall of 2008, Boerne High was shut down for the 2008-09 school year and underwent a facelift, so all the high school students in BISD went to Boerne Champion while BHS was being renovated.
Boerne High re-opened in the fall of 2009, which means the Greyhounds didn’t play a football game for 21 months, or basically two years, the only time that’s ever happened.
After last playing Nov. 9, 2007, against Fredericksburg, BHS returned to the field on Aug. 28, 2009, against Lytle and basically had to build the program from scratch. The Greyhounds lost in their return to the gridiron.
This week’s photo is from the Sept. 1, 2009, issue of the Star and the caption under the photo mentions that it was almost two years since the Greyhounds had last played a game.
