If Boerne is anything, it’s consistent. For the fourth week in a row, the Greyhounds scored either 49 or 50 points in picking up another decisive District 13-5A DII win, a 50-0 whitewashing of the McCollum Cowboys.

The Greyhounds moved to 4-1 in district play, setting up a battle for second place next week at home, when the Kerrville Tivy Antlers come to town in the regular -season finale.

But Friday’s game was a blowout from the start. Boerne scored touchdowns on five of its first six possessions for a 34-0 lead. Sophomore quarterback Hank Hendrix threw four touchdown passes on the night, three of those in the opening half.

The 50 points continued a seven-touchdown trend after the ‘Hounds put 49 points on Harlandale, 50 on Victoria West, 49 on Veterans Memorial, and Friday, 50 more on McCollum in building a four-game win streak.

But none of those was as decisive as Friday’s win. Boerne took the opening kick and marched 75 yards in eight plays, leading to a Hank Hendrix-to-Hutson Hendrix 22-yard touchdown pass and an early 7-0 lead.

The Boerne defense rose to the occasion, holding McCollum (2-7, 0-5) to a three-and-out and then forcing a turnover on downs after McCollum picked a Hank Hendrix pass on Boerne’s second possession.

But it was all “end zone” for Boerne after that point. Its next four drives ended with touchdowns — an Adam Hicks 7-yard run for a 14-0 lead after one quarter of play; a Jeffrey Morrison 1-yard plow for a 21-0 lead, a Hendrix-to-Ben Bays 41-yard catch-and-run for the 28-0 lead and finally a Hendrix-to-Hicks 7-yard flareout pass for the 34-0 lead at the half.

Hendrix played a superb game, going 17-of-21 and three touchdowns in the first half alone. After the Hounds defense held McCollum to another three-and-out — one of seven three-play drives on the night — possession, Boerne put together another eight-play drive, this one covering 63 yards. They used five runs and three passes, Hendrix going three-for-three including the 12-yard scoring strike to Will Traylor for a 41-0 lead.

That was Hendrix’s last snap of the game, finishing 19-of-22 for four touchdowns with just the one interception off a tipped ball.

After the Hendrix- to-Traylor score, McCollum’s deep man on the kickoff tried to kneel down in the end zone but did so at the 1-yard line. Three plays later, the McCollum quarterback, attempting a pass out of the end zone, dropped the ball, which rolled out of the back of the end zone for a safety and a 43-0 lead after three quarters of play.

Boerne tacked on one more touchdown, Zach Freasier became the sixth Hound to score, running through a gaping hole in the line from 5 yards out for the 50-0 lead and win.

If Boerne can run its win streak to five games on Friday against Kerrville Tivy, they will clinch home field in the first round of the playoffs with a 5-1 record, good enough for second place behind Alamo Heights.

But a Boerne loss to Tivy would definitely muddy the playoff waters. Three teams, Boerne, Tivy and Victoria West, would all finish 3-2 in district play if West beats Veterans Memorial Friday.

In a points-scored tiebreaker, Boerne’s 17-point win (50-33) over Victoria West looks good, but West beat Tivy by 19 points (4526). A Tivy win would have to be more than two touchdowns for Boerne to lose out on the second-place finish.

But the ‘Hounds can end all speculation with an outright victory on the final weekend of the season.
