Deer swat Yellow Jackets to close out district

The Comfort volleyball team finished out the regular season Tuesday with a four-set victory over Llano.

Comfort stung the Lady Jackets, 22-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-22.

The Deer end the regular season at 21-15 and are 7-3 in District 5-3A. They finished third in district but it doesn’t matter at this point since the two larger enrollment schools go big school and the two smaller enrollments play in the small school.

Comfort is a small school and will likely play Wall in the first round next week. Be sure to check the Boerne Star for details.

Hope Van Geffen was the star of the match with a double-double after she recorded 22 kills and 18 digs. The 22 kills is two short of the school record.

Tindall Ahrens also had a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs.

Llano took the first set in a see-saw affair. In the second set, Llano built a 14-5 lead but the Deer came roaring back thanks to the serving of Van Geffen and Natalia Martinez and went on to win the set, 25-23.

In the third set, Van Geffen and Ahrens pounded the Llano back row and held off a late charge by Llano’s Amelia Robinson who had 36 kills on the night.

By the fourth set, Robinson was exhausted and the Deer took advantage on the service line. Ahrens had 7 of her team-high 8 aces in the fourth set, including 5 in a row.

Llano battled back to tie the score at 22-22 but kills by Van Geffen and Emily Hill and an ace from Ahrens gave the Deer a 25-22 fourth-set win and also a three-setsto- one match victory
