Boerne High clinched a playoff spot with last week’s victory over Veterans Memorial, but the Greyhounds are still jockeying for seeding in District 13-5A DII.
Alamo Heights sits atop the standings at 5-0, followed by Boerne and Kerrville Tivy at 3-1, while Victoria West is 3-2, followed by Veterans Memorial at 1-3 and Harlandale and McCollum both at 0-4.
The Greyhound visit McCollum Friday for a 7 p.m. contest.
McCollum has given up 54, 44, 55 and 60 points this year in their four district losses, while the Greyhounds are starting to click and have scored 49, 50 and 49 in their last three 13-5A DII wins.
The Hounds were up 21-10 at halftime in last week’s game vs. the Patriots and then tallied 21 in the third quarter alone to blow it open. They added one more TD in the fourth quarter.
Boerne’s defense turned over the Patriots five times in the game and set up their first two scores with short fields of 13 and 25 yards.
The Hounds didn’t put together a long, sustained drive until the second quarter and head coach Che Hendrix said they can’t always depend on the defense giving them short fields.
“Our defense put us in unbelievable situations, but we need come out a little stronger offensively,” Hendrix said.
McCollum has picked up non-district wins against Corpus Christi Ray and Floresville, but is winless in district.
Hendrix said the Cowboys prefer to keep the ball on the ground.
“They’ve got a good fullback and they want to run the ball,” he said. “We have to do a good job up front and get them in third and long.”
Adam Hicks made his return last week after dealing with an ankle issue. He rushed for three touchdowns on 10 carries and Hendrix said Hicks appears to be back.
“He responded well,” the coach said. “Hopefully he’s close to 100 percent.”
Ivan Perez, Matthew Garrison and Zach Freasier added rushing touchdowns, while Brooks Perez snagged a 29-yard TD pass from Hank Hendrix , while Diego Jimenez was 7 for 7 on extra points.
Brooks Perez led the Boerne receivers with 10 catches for 134 yards.
Hutson Hendrix led the team in tackles with 12, Ryan Hooper and Jaxon Baize had 10 tackles apiece, Cash Gatlin made 8 stops, followed by Ty Bush with 7 tackles.
Each district game at this time of year means a whole lot. A win or a loss in late October or early November can be the difference between making or not making the playoffs.
After facing McCollum Friday, the Greyhounds host Kerrville Tivy in a game that will likely affect playoff seeding.
Hendrix said he and the staff talk about how much these games mean at this time of year.
“Every week the buy-in becomes bigger and the stakes become higher,” he said.
