Geneva football team finally gets bye week

The Geneva School of Boerne football team is coming off its biggest win of the year after the Eagles defeated San Antonio Compass Rose Legacy last week.

Geneva is off until Nov. 8 when they visit Corpus Christi John Paul II to close out the regular season.

Last Friday’s win was a good one to have under their belt as they go into their bye week.

Geneva’s bye week is coming very late in the season, but Eagles coach Grant Gaston said it’s no big deal.

The downtime the Eagles have will help them get a little healthier down the stretch, which they hope includes a long playoff run.

Gaston said they’ll have a little fun this week too.

“During the bye week we will focus on staying sharp, cleaning up a few areas that need some attention and then we’ll let our seniors plan, lead and coach our practice on Wednesday,” he said. “Those practices, believe it or not, can be more intense than what we run.”

The Eagles have lost a few players for the year, but it’s also created opportunities for others.

Bryce Hanover has taken over at the QB spot because of an injury and has completed 57 of 151 passes for 1,517 yards to go with 15 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.

Brady Chandler leads the receiving corps with 55 catches for 989 yards and 14 TDs, Reid Aderholt has 546 yards on 25 catches and 7 scores, while Wyatt Bruss has 3 receiving touchdowns.

Reid Wilson and Hanover pace the ground game, with Wilson rushing for 325 yards on 59 carries and 3 touchdowns, while Hanover has 54 totes for 281 yards and 6 TDs and Shane McNew has 3 rushing scores.

In last week’s game, McNew, Chase Doran and Hanover all played QB, with McNew and Doran throwing touchdown passes as Gaston moved players in and out and rested most of his starters.

Doran led the receivers last week with 5 catches for 66 yards, while TJ Cross and Walter Teague both hauled in receiving TDs.

McNew and Chris Oliver paced the ground game with 8 carries and McNew finished with 93 rushing yards and Oliver totaled 59 yards.

So far this year, Reid Wilson leads the defense with 67 total tackles, Caleb Baggs has 53 tackles and Koen Huebner has recorded 52 tackles.

Mikhail Boespflug has three fumble recoveries and Greg Gallagher has recovered two fumbles, Wilson has forced two fumbles and recovered one and Chandler leads the defense in interceptions and has come up with 4 picks.

Bruss and Doran have defensive touchdowns as well.

A win next week against C.C. John Paul II should ensure a home playoff win.
