The Comfort football team is sitting at 0-2 in district and needs a strong finish to their season if they’re going to make the playoffs.
Postseason play is still a possibility for Comfort but they’ll probably have to win their last two to get in.
The Bobcats host Lexington Friday in Comfort, 7 p.m.
There are only five teams in Comfort’s league, which means they play four district games. In some cases, one win will get a team in.
Comfort coach Jay Rieken said one win would help and two wins should do it, but they’ll have to come against the district front runners Lexington this Friday and Blanco next week.
“We have to win out or we have to win one and get some help,” Rieken said. “The attitude has been good; the coaches and kids are working.”
Comfort was in a shootout with Thrall last week and lost 61-47. The Bobcats suffered a couple of key injuries after the team’s leading rusher Topper Sterling and their QB Carter Pape both left the game and didn’t return.
Rieken said he didn’t know if either would be available for Friday. The coach said the good news is that other players stepped up when the injuries occurred.
“I’ll know before Thursday,” he said. “In some aspects of the game, we got better last week because some people went down, but we kept going. It was good to see that.”
State-ranked Lexington suffered its only loss of the season last week against Blanco, 38-28.
Despite the loss, Rieken said Lexington is still very tough.
When asked what the Eagles do well, Rieken’s answer was pretty simple.
“Everything,” he said. “Lexington is good.”
Sterling returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown last week and that was just the start of the fireworks.
Thrall tallied 26 points in the second to go with 7 in the first quarter and held a 33-17 lead at halftime after the Bobcat tallied 10 points in the second.
The teams kept scoring at a rapid pace in the third after the Tigers tallied 21 more points, while the Bobcats kept pace and scored 16 to make it 54-33 to end the quarter.
Thrall tacked on the first TD of the fourth but Comfort fought to the end after Pape hit Hunter Ledlow on a 70-yard pass, while Ledlow rumbled in from 55 yards as the Bobcats had the last two TDs of the game.
Ledlow led the team in rushing with 89 yards and 2 TDs on 9 carries and also added a receiving touchdown, while Pape was 5 for 12 through the air for 111 yards and a score.
Just like they never gave up against Thrall, Rieken said they have to believe they can win out against the top two teams in the district.
“The attitude has been good, their spirits are good,” he said. “They know they’re not out of it, stranger things have happened.”
