Talk about complimentary football.
Boerne’s defense came up with five turnovers in Friday’s district tussle with Veterans Memorial and the Greyhound offense turned those five miscues into five touchdowns.
The result was a dominant 49-17 victory by a Greyhounds team that has now won three straight and stands at 3-1 in 13-5A DII.
BHS is 5-3 overall and visits McCollum Friday.
Boerne’s defense knocked the Patriots on their heels early. After forcing a punt on their first drive, Braden Bays came up with a fumble recovery at the Pats’ 13-yard line on their second possession.
Three plays later, Adam Hicks ran it in from the 4 and the Greyhounds were up 7-0 after the Diego Jimenez kick.
Ty Bush intercepted a Patriots pass on their next drive, and again, the defense gave the BHS offense great field position at the Veterans Memorial 25.
Hicks again had the honors of scoring the next TD on a 2-yard plunge and it was 14-0.
“(Hicks) had a nice bounce to him. When he’s healthy he has that pop, he has that explosiveness and he showed that tonight,” Coach Che Hendrix said. “That’s going to add a bonus to our running game. Our running backs have done a great job filling in for him but Hicks has a different gear so it’ll be nice to get him healthy for the stretch run.”
Veterans Memorial strung together an 8-play scoring drive to start the second and cut Boerne’s lead in half after Nathaniel Ortega hauled in a 50-yard bomb from QB Dallas Harrell and it was 14-7.
But the Greyhounds answered with an 8-play drive of their own after Ivan Perez rumbled in from the 17 and the lead was 21-7 midway through the second.
Hutson Hendrix had a big 32-yard run on a third and 7 to give Boerne a first down before Perez took it in for the score.
The Patriots knocked in a field goal right before halftime and it was 21-10, but the Greyhounds controlled the second half.
Boerne took the opening kickoff and marched 75 yards and scored in only seven plays as the Hounds added to their lead after Hicks accounted for his third rushing touchdown of the night on a 5-yard scramble.
Veterans Memorial was putting together a pretty good drive on their next possession but a fumble killed their momentum and Jaxon Baize jumped on the loose ball at Boerne’s 5-yard line.
The Greyhounds took it 95 yards for another score to blow it open at 35-10 after Brooks Perez hauled in Boerne’s first passing TD of the night on a 29-yard toss from Hank Hendrix.
On the Pats’ next drive, Hutson Hendrix came up with Boerne’s fourth turnover of the night with a pick and almost scored on the return, but was tackled at the VM 10-yard line.
From there, Matthew Garrison carried the rock into the end zone on Boerne’s first play after the interception and it was 42-10 late in the third.
On three of their drives, the Boerne offense only had to move the ball a combined 48 yards to find paydirt after the defense set them up in great shape.
“The defense played outstanding. We felt good this week about our game plan and how we were going to play,” Coach Hendrix said. “That was our theme all week, get off to a great start and the defense had a great start.”
Boerne’s defense wasn’t done coming up with turnovers. This time Ryan Hooper recorded a takeaway and the offense only had to move the ball 27 yards for a score.
Zach Freasier capped the 27-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge and Boerne’s lead ballooned to 49-10 early in the fourth.
The Patriots had the last score of the night with a 5-yard Brycen Boden TD run for the final of 49-17.
