Three BISD x-country teams advance to 5A state meet

The Boerne Champion boys and girls cross country teams qualified for the 5A state cross country meet after they both finished within the top four at regionals.

Three cross country teams from Boerne ISD ran at this week’s Region IV-5A meet and all three qualified for the upcoming 5A state meet.

The Boerne Champion boys and girls, along with the Boerne High boys teams, all competed at the regional meet in Corpus Christi Tuesday and all three finished within the top four to punch their tickets to state.

The 5A state meet is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 2, in Round Rock at Settlers Park. The 5A girls race starts at 10:45 a.m. and the boys begin at 11:25 a.m.

The top four teams at regionals and the top 10 individual runners not on an advancing team qualify for state in each classification.

Varsity Girls

The Lady Chargers placed third with 125 points behind Smithson Valley (39) and McAllen (79), but ahead of Laredo Nixon (177) to all qualify for state in the field of 24 teams.

Defending state champ Elizabeth Leachman started but didn’t complete the race since she was feeling under the weather, but Leachman, a junior, will get the chance to defend her individual state title on Nov. 2 since the team made it.

Senior Kynley Albright paced the Chargers after she was 13th in 19:36.61, while freshmen Rebecca Bezerra and Addison Graham went 22-23 after Bezerra ran a 20:08.39 and Graham posted a 20:12.26.

Sophomore Luciana Zazueta Ibarra finished 32nd in 20:37.67, freshman Payton Kidder came in 35th in 20:50.87 and freshman Madison Mungia rounded out the team after she was 40th with a time of 21:01.11.

Varsity Boys

At the district meet held Oct. 9, the Champion boys were able to hold off the Boerne High team by four points but that wasn’t the case Tuesday as the Greyhounds edged the Chargers, 80-94.

BHS finished third with its 80 points and the Chargers were fourth and it was good enough to get both to state.

Weslaco East won the region (69) and McAllen took second (80) to qualify for state in the field of 24 teams.

One thing that didn’t change from district to regionals was Champion’s Charlie Houck winning the individual title.

Houck, a senior, ran a 15:56.69 to top the field, while Boerne High junior Carsten Bain was third with a 16:22.28.

Bain’s time was followed by freshman sensation Valor Menn who came in 7th with a 16:36.16, while junior Aaron Garcia placed 21st in 17:04.00.

Junior Barrett Crofut finished in 17:05.15 for 22nd and senior Jackson Temple clocked in at 17:11.38 for 27th, while senior Ben Macias came in 87th in 19:39.00 and senior Ethan Christianson was 113th with a time of 19:15.15.

For the Chargers, behind Houck’s first-place time of 15:56.69, was junior senior Caleb Dehart who was 11th in 16:41.00, while senior Luis Tovar posted a 16:51.59 for 15th.

Three sophomores took the next three spots for champion after Shawn Edwards ran a 17:05.65 for 23rd, Mason Nelson was 44th in 17:39.19 and Brandon Martinez completed the course in 18:05.40 for 57th, while senior Luke Mitchell rounded out the team with a time of 18:24.35 for 74th.

The Boerne High boys ran to a third-place finish at regionals and advances to the 5A state meet scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 2. Submitted photos
