The Boerne Champion volleyball team’s chances at a district title – or at least a share of it – took a hit Tuesday night after they were swept by New Braunfels, 25-18, 25-20, 25-22, however the Chargers are still in the playoffs.

Champion and New Braunfels are both 11-3 in district but the Unicorns now own the tiebreaker over the Chargers since they swept them this year.

Pieper is currently ahead of both atop the district standings at 13-2, while the Unicorns are second, followed by Champion.

Smithson Valley and Kerrville Tivy are battling it out for the final playoff spot available at 9-5 and played Friday. Smithson Valley won their first-round meeting and hosted Friday’s match.

Once the playoffs start, the top two enrollment schools go “big school” and the smaller two go “small school.”

If Tivy finishes fourth, then the Chargers will be go “big school” and if Smithson Valley takes fourth, Champion will go “small school” once the postseason starts.

In Tuesday’s match, Brielle Boothe led the Chargers in kills with 11, while Ella Coleman and Cassidy Breuer both tallied 5 kills.

Coleman recorded 2 aces, Taylor Fenton finished with 4 blocks and Breuer had 2 blocks, while Azteca Crawford came up with 12 digs, Coleman and Samantha Calderon both added 10 digs and Boothe totaled 9 digs, while Crawford dished out 20 assists.
