The Boerne High team tennis season ended last Friday at the Region IV-5A tournament in San Antonio.
BHS played Mission Sharyland in the regional semifinals Thursday and fell, 10-5.
That put the Greyhounds in the third-place match against Flour Bluff last Friday.
At the regional tennis tourney, the two losers in the semifinals play to decide third place and because of that, Boerne coach Tyson Stewart said he was excited that they had a chance to end their season on a winning note.
“I told the team that we can end it on a good note or a bad note and I’d much rather end it on a win,” he said. “Not many people get to end it on a win and not be at state. We can finish out on a high note.”
Another motivating factor for BHS was the fact that Flour Bluff had defeated the Greyhounds earlier in the season, 10-7, and Boerne was looking for a little payback.
It didn’t happen as Flour Bluff went on to edge the Greyhounds, 10-9, and give them two losses in a row to end the season.
They finished 17-5 overall and despite the two consecutive setbacks at the regional tourney, Stewart said it was a great season in their first year playing as a 5A.
“Not many people go up into the next classification and make the regional tournament,” he said. “That’s a big program booster for us. It’s something we can build on.”
The pieces are in place for another solid showing next year in team tennis. The Greyhounds only graduate three players at the end of the school year – Dustin Davis, Garner Graves and Garrett Stevens.
Before that, they’ll have their spring individual season starting after the Christmas break.
Mission Sharyland won the region after they defeated Alamo Heights in the championship match.
