Boerne Champion picked up a much-needed win last Friday against MacArthur at home and hopes to build on that contest as they hit the road for a game at Victoria East this Friday.

The Chargers and Titans start at 7 p.m. in Victoria.

Champion’s 58-13 win over Mac last week helped keep their playoff chances alive.

At 1-3 in the district, it’s still an uphill climb for the Chargers at this point. They’ll have to win all three of their remaining games and will also need some help but Champion coach Blane Ellis said it’s all about the game ahead of them – and that’s all at this point.

“We’re just taking it one week at a time,” he said. “If you look at the big picture it can be overwhelming, so we’re just taking it one game at a time.” Victoria East is in the same boat as the Chargers and is 1-3 in district as well. The Titans are 2-5 overall and Champion is 4-3. While Victoria East only has one district win, they’ve played some of the district front runners pretty tight. The Titans lost to New Braunfels, 23-21, fell to Seguin by seven points, 37-30, and were within two touchdowns of Wagner at 42-28.

“ They’re playing close with people,” Ellis said. “Seguin and New Braunfels were close, but New Braunfels turned it over five times and it was way closer than it should have been. They had a really close game with Seguin.”

The Chargers can score with the best of them and tallied 66 points against Seguin and had 58 last Friday against MacArthur.

Ellis said the Titans will be a good challenge for them.

“Defensively, they’re very athletic. They have good corners and their defensive line is athletic,” he said. “They used a lot of gap schemes and do a good job.”

Victoria East doesn’t score like the Chargers can. In fact, 36 is their highest point output this year and it came against Mac. Still, Ellis said they can’t take them lightly.

“Offensively they’re pretty multiple,” he said. “They want to run the ball and pass off of that.”

The 58 points Champion scored last week vs. the Brahmas was the second most this year and they spread the ball around pretty good.

William Burgess and Brogan Dempsey both caught touchdown passes from Julian Navarrete, while Brady Smith, Parker Davis and Zach Garcia all ran it into the end zone. Brandon Nocker caught a TD pass from Connor Macafee and Nathan Bell booted a 28-yard field goal.

Defensively, Garland Whitehead caused a fumble and then recovered it, while Cash Hill intercepted a pass. Ellis said the team is getting better every week and at this point of the season it’s about tweaking little things as they head down the stretch run.

“We look at film and make adjustments that we carry into the next week,” he said. “Right now, we want to continue to run the football and get better every week.”
