Eagles play non-district football game this week

Geneva School of Boerne will be an overwhelming favorite Friday when the Eagles host San Antonio Compass Rose Friday.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

It’s an odd part of the schedule for the Eagles. This coming Friday’s contest was supposed to be a district game but a team dropped out of the league late in the summer and left everybody scrambling to find a non-district game.

Geneva picked up San Antonio Compass Rose, a team that has scored a grand total of one touchdown this year. Yes, that’s not a misprint – one touchdown this year – and is 0-7 entering Friday’s contest.

Eagles coach Grant Gaston said he knows the Polar Bears are struggling but added that it will be business as usual for his team.

“Our approach will be to continue to improve at every facet of our game,” he said. “We should not be playing up to or down to any opponent. We need to constantly focus on playing at our very best regardless of the opponent.”

Gaston said some of the older players will get the night off as they’ll let the underclassmen see most of the action. That means the upperclassmen will get two weeks off in a row since the Eagles are on bye the following week.

After Friday, the Eagles are off Nov. 1 and return to action Nov. 8 against Corpus Christi John Paul II to close out the regular season.

Gaston said they’ll just deal with how their schedule worked out. In other words – it is what it is.

“Having the bye week so late in the season is not ideal, but our team is built to improvise, adapt and overcome,” he said. “Now that we’re approaching the bye week, we can see it as a good thing since it allows us to heal up in time to make a playoff run.”

In last week’s district win over Hill Country Christian, Brady Chandler stood out in the game by hauling in two touchdown passes and intercepting two deep balls while on defense to end HCC drives.

Eagles QB Bryce Hanover accounted for five touchdowns (2 running and 3 passing), while senior Wyatt Bruss caught the other touchdown pass. The one thing that Geneva did Friday that Boerne Champion, Boerne High and Comfort couldn’t do this year was win a homecoming game.

Gaston said last Friday was a special night for a lot of different reasons. “We always want to win for our home crowd which has been so supportive of us this year – from students to parents to teachers to admin to alumni,” Gaston said. “Members of the 2014 (six man) and 2019 (11 man) state championship teams were present so it was good to show that we are trying to continue to build upon the legacy that they created here at Geneva.”
