Just about everything went Boerne Champion’s way Friday night when the Chargers hosted MacArthur in a 13-5A DI contest at BISD Stadium.

Champion scored on the first play of the game and never looked back. In fact, they tallied three touchdowns on their first four plays from scrimmage on their way to a 59-13 beatdown of the Brahmas.

It’s Champion’s first district win and snaps a three-game skid. The Chargers are 1-3 in district and 4-3 overall. They’ll visit Victoria East Friday.

Champion coach Blane Ellis said it felt good to finish a game on a positive note.

“We talked about throwing the knockout punch and it’s something we’ve left out the last three games, but our guys did that tonight,” he said. “We’ve been in games and need to finish and we finished tonight.

Winning is fun, it feels good.” On their first place from scrimmage, Chargers QB Julian Navarrete hit receiver William Burgess on a 91-yard touchdown strike and it was 7-0 just 23 ticks into the game.

Garland Whitehead forced a fumble and recovered it on Mac’s possession after the kickoff and gave the Chargers the ball at the 19.

Two plays later, Brady Smith scrambled in and it was 14-0 and Champion had only run three offensive plays.

Cash Hill forced another turnover with an interception on Mac’s next drive. On the first play, Navarrete aired it out again and hit Brogan Dempsey and it was 21-0 and Champion had only run four plays.

In the second quarter, Parker Davis ran it in from the 8-yard line and the lead ballooned to 28-0 with 5:00 to play before halftime.

The Brahmas were able to score their first touchdown of district play on a 30-yard Colton Cornwell run late in the second, but Champion answered with another quick score. Navarrete connected with Dempsey again, this time on a 63-yard scoring strike to cap a 3-play drive and it was 35-6 at the half.

Nathan Bell added to the Chargers lead in the third quarter with a 28-yard field goal and the scoreboard said 38-6 with 4:57 remaining in the period.

After the Bell FG, Cornwell tallied his second rushing TD of the night with a 14-yard sprint into the end zone and Mac had trimmed the lead to 38-13, but the Chargers answered on the last play of the third when Navarrete found Burgess again on a 25-yard pass to bump the lead to 45-13 going to the fourth.

The Chargers added two more scores in the fourth quarter as Ellis moved players in and out. Brandon Nocker took a sharp hit but held on to the ball and fell into the end zone on a pass from Connor Macafee.

Zach Garcia later capped the scoring for the Chargers after he rumbled in from the 15-yard line with 2:30 left for the final of 59-14 after the Bell PAT.

Ellis said he wasn’t trying to run up the score but wanted to let some of the younger players get game experience.

“For those guys that normally don’t get to play, we’re going to try to run the offense the same for them,” he said. “They come to practice every day, and we try to be mindful of how we call plays, but at the same time, those guys have earned that.”
