Comfort High kicked off district play Friday night by hosting Rogers in their District 5-3A opener.

Most of the action took place in the first two quarters in a see-saw first half.

It was 24-24 at the break but the Bobcats were shutout over the last two quarters and Rogers tallied the only score of the second half as they went on to defeat the Bobcats, 31-24.

Comfort is 2-4 overall and 0-1 in district. They’ll hit the road Friday for a game at Thrall.

Each team scored four times in the first half with three touchdowns and a field goal as they alternated the scoring.

Omar Rivera put Comfort on the board first with a 27-yard field goal for the 3-0 edge midway through the opening stanza.

Rogers answered with a 24-yard run by Blayton Watkins with 6:56 left in the quarter and it was 6-3 after the Eagles went for two and missed on the pass.

Topper Sterling put Comfort back on top with a 53-yard TD gallop and the Bobcats were leading 10-6.

Rogers was able to trim the lead to a point at the end of the first quarter with a 27-yard field goal and it was 10-9 in favor of the ’Cats.

Jose Gaspar extended Comfort’s lead to 17-9 early in the second on a 39-yard TD pass from Carter Pape, but once again, the Eagles responded.

Rogers cut into Comfort’s lead again after Tyson Sisneroz took it to the house on a 49-yard run and the lead was down to one at 17-16.

Pape pushed Comfort’s advantage back to eight points with a 35-yard scramble into the end and it was 24-16, but Rogers tied it right before the half on a Sisneroz 8-yard jaunt into paydirt. The Eagles went for two and made it and it was knotted up at 24-all with 3:12 until halftime.

Before the game, Comfort coach Jay Rieken called Rogers a scoring machine and while the machine only tallied one touchdown in the second half, it was enough to give them the edge over the Bobcats.

Bryce Watson gave Rogers the final lead of the contest after he muscled his way in from the 3-yard line and the Eagles pulled ahead, 31-24.

Comfort was held off the board for the entire second half, the first time that’s happened all year.
