Boerne Champion hosted Boerne High Tuesday for their second-round District 26-5A volleyball match and the results were basically the same as in their first meeting.
Champion took both matches to claim the season series this year and, in both cases, they won in four sets.
The Lady Chargers picked up the 25-22, 25-19, 24-26, 25-10 win on Tuesday.
In their first meeting, Boerne won the first set before Champion won three in a row. On Tuesday, the Chargers were up 2-0 before the Lady Hounds avoided the sweep with a third-set victory before Champion closed it out in the fourth.
The Chargers improve to 31-6 overall and 10-2 in district, while BHS slips to 20-13 overall and 5-8 in district.
Tuesday’s win by Champion basically knocks the Lady Hounds out of playoff consideration.
BHS hosted Alamo Heights Friday and then has Pieper and New Braunfels left on the schedule.
The Chargers hosted Pieper Friday in a match that will likely determine the district championship. They host New Braunfels Tuesday and then visit Wagner and Kerrville Tivy to close out the regular season.
While Tuesday’s match wasn’t a sellout like it was in their first meeting, it was still a packed gym and both coaches said it was great to play in that atmosphere.
“I know the girls were hyped up about it. They have friends on the other side of the net and it’s just a huge community event,” Chargers coach Kelly McDaniel said. “I think it’s obviously a little nerve wracking for them, but overall it’s really fun.”
Greyhounds coach Staci Lawrence agreed.
“Playing in loud, full atmospheres is always fun,” she said. “These environments help the team feel special and rise to the challenge a crowd typically creates.”
Just like in their firstround meeting, the Lady Hounds had a fast start, but the difference this time was that the Lady Chargers bounced back and won that first set. In their first meeting, BHS held on for the 1-0 match lead.
BHS was up 8-0 on Tuesday, but the Chargers tied it at 12-12. It was tied nine more times after that before Champion went up 22-21 and then closed it out from there.
The Chargers had their own fast start in Game 2 and took a 5-0 lead and never trailed from there. They were up 7-1 and 8-2 and closed it out at 25-15.
BHS won its only set in Game 3. The Chargers were up 23-21 but BHS tied it at 23-23. Champion scored the next point but once again, the Greyhounds tied it at 24-24. From there, the Lady Hounds tallied the next two points for the win and forced a fourth game.
McDaniel gave credit to BHS for fighting back.
“Boerne serves the ball extremely well and we had to find a way to respond. At the end of the third, we just didn’t do it in time,” she said. “I’m super proud of how we bounced back in the fourth set though.”
Lawrence said her team could have given up after the second set but liked how they responded in that third set to avoid a sweep.
“I think I’m the most proud of how we responded to challenges in the first few sets,” she said. “Champion had a much faster offense than we anticipated and I thought we made some good defensive moves in an attempt to adjust.”
Once it went to the fourth set, the Chargers turned it up a notch and dominated on their way to a 25-10 win.
For Champion, Ella Coleman and Cassidy Breuer both tallied 11 kills and Brielle Boothe had 10 kills.
Azteca Crawford dropped in 3 aces, Coleman had 2 aces, Briley Wolff totaled 5 blocks and Taylor Fenton and Breuer tallied 3 blocks each.
Boothe came up with 15 digs, Coleman had 13 digs and Samantha Calderon finished with 12 digs.
For the Lady Greyhounds, Ava Rocchio led BHS with 10 kills, while Kaylie Bourn and Aubree Stegall added 8 kills each.
BHS recorded 10 aces and were led by Calynn Ramos with 3 aces, while Lauren Magnus, Holly Reeder and Kynsie Jones came up with 2 aces apiece.
Bourn tallied 4 blocks and Ava Roccio had 3 blocks, Haley Wheeler totaled 26 digs and Magnus added 7 digs.
