After a bye week, the Comfort High football team will return to action Friday to open district play.
Comfort hosts Rogers this week at Bobcat Stadium, 7 p.m., as they begin District 13-3A DII action.
Comfort is 2-3 through non-district and Rogers is 1-6 overall. The Eagles opened district action last week and lost to Blanco, 46-39, to stand at 0-1 in district.
Rogers only has one win, but Comfort coach Jay Rieken said their record is not a true measure of how good the Eagles really are.
Rieken points out that Rogers has scored a bunch of points in their games and in their lone win against Schulenburg, the Eagles tallied 63 points.
“They’re the best 1-6 team I’ve ever seen, they’re a scoring machine” he said. “When you look at who they played, they’ve played a really good schedule.”
The Eagles tallied 42, 46, 40 and 39 points in losses and are averaging 35 points a game. They’ll attack a team with the option and Rieken said they run it well.
“We have to play assignment football and be very disciplined,” he said. “When they run the option, we have to get them indecisive on the pitch and hopefully we can create some turnovers.
“We have to slow them down and keep their offense off the field,” Rieken added.
The bye week has been good for the Bobcats as they were able to rest and heal up a bit.
“The attitude has been great; we’ve had great practices and you can tell their focus has been better,” Rieken said.
The coach added that they are getting one starter back and may get another in time for Friday’s game.
“We’re still trying to get players back and get our legs underneath us. We’ll have one back for sure and possibly two, which will help,” he said. “Just having that one player back has made a big difference in practice.”
As the Bobcats head down the stretch part of their season, Rieken said it’s the little things they need to focus on.
“We have to keep getting better and go get a win,” he said. “We’ve got to cut out some penalties. Against Bandera (on Oct. 4), from the middle of the third quarter on there were nine penalties called and all of them were against us.”
