Roberts uses vibrant color to create works of art

Selected as ‘Artist of the Month’ for October

CELEBRATING THE ARTS

The highest compliment artist Carolyn Roberts states she ever received was when a dear friend viewed her painting, Bounty of Indian Summer, and exclaimed, “I never thought of a pumpkin being beautiful until you showed me.”

Roberts has been selected as the Boerne Art League “Artist of the Month” for October for the Hill Country Council of the Arts (HCCA).

Roberts’ mission is to show others the beauty she sees by finding and then heightening each color to give as much punch to the painting as it can handle.

“Vibrant and vivid are words frequently used to describe my body of work,” Roberts said. “My signature style is that of a colorist, an artist who produces vibrant, color-drenched paintings. “While my paintings look true to color, they are brighter than real life, imparting a magical feeling that the world is a richer, more beautiful place than we can see in our day-today lives,” she said.

This core painting philosophy involves a new way of seeing rather than a painting methodology. Henry Hensche, considered the father of colorist paintings, once said, “Paintings are the visual music of the world.”

“I hope my paintings sing to you,” she added.

For years, Roberts has been an active member participating in exhibitions and judged shows around the state, winning numerous awards and ribbons.

Memberships past and present include: Boerne Art League, Boerne Professional Artists, Coppini Academy of Fine Arts, San Antonio Art League, Southwest Watercolor Society, Woodlands Art League, Rockport Center for the Arts, Lone Star Art Guild and Irving Art League. She was recently spotted at the Boerne Visual Artists Social at The Bevy.

During October, Roberts’ painting can be viewed at Frost Bank, Texas Heritage Bank, Bank of America, Security State Bank and Trust and Jefferson Bank, and The (Kronkosky) Center.

Oct. 19: “Transition and Expression,” with artist Pauly Tamez, abstract expressionism oil painting.

“I always wanted to paint abstract, but there was something inside me that just wouldn’t let me get away from creating a representational, realistic landscape,” Tamez said. “I had a hard time ... expressing myself in an abstract way.

“Then I left the workforce in December last year. I felt free, unencumbered, and there were no expectations of me,” Tamez added. “For the first time in my life, I was able to let go and express myself freely with color and form.”

Nov. 9: “Digital Painting” with artist Susan Reich, using an iPad and Procreate. Though Susan is an accomplished artist in watercolor, oil and acrylic, due to various medical reasons, she can no longer stand at an easel to paint. Her husband, seeing how she missed painting, bought her an iPad and a digital painting program called Procreate.

“Painting on a screen is much like painting on canvas or paper,” Reich said. “You choose your medium, pick the brushes, pencil, or even charcoal to work with that medium. Choose a color palette ... now it’s time to create using the same techniques.”
