Bingo is back; time to silence phone speakers

THE BOOKWORM

Bingo back at the Heath

The Patrick Heath Public Library is hosting its third annual Bingo Night on Oct. 8, beginning at 6 p.m. We’re handing out food, fun and prizes, so be sure to join us. No registration is required, and the event is for anyone whose chin comes up over the table’s edge.

Memories alive with library’s Memory Lab

Thanks to funding from the Mellon Foundation, we have developed a new Public Memory Lab for anyone who wants to preserve their family histories and stories that have been passed down.

Visitors have the opportunity to convert photos, slides, film reels and VHS recordings into digital files. Sarah Habeeb, our library’s Memory Lab coordinator, will open the space to visitors who need this service.

The lab officially opened Oct. 1. You can visit from 1-6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. We are closed on Mondays and Saturdays.

Instructions and room rules can be found on our website under Programs and Services.

Hispanic heritage

We are almost through Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15-Oct. 15. We invite you to come out and join us at the Farmers Market of Herff Farm on Oct. 12, for a celebration of Spanish culture.

This is a special edition of our Saturday storytimes at the Herff. All ages are welcome to attend this colorful, joyful performance by Faisan Folklorico of San Antonio.

Live! at the Library

We are excited to present our popular live-music series on the third Thursday of each month. This month we feature a new act, but one that will resonate in our little German village.

Yodel Blitz delivers lively German folk music with yodeling, three-part harmonies, accordion, clarinet, bass, brass, alphorn and cowbells.

They guarantee a fun, beer-drinking, dance-along time. We encourage you to bring blankets or chairs to comfortably sit, and you are also welcome to bring a picnic supper to enjoy while listening to music. Doesn’t that sound fun?

Some policy changes

We recognize the need to take phone calls or watch a video while at the PHPL. However, we need to provide a little more calm to a very busy library.

A policy recently approved by the library advisory board requires patrons to turn off their speakerphones; however, you are welcome to use this function in our study rooms and other public meeting spaces when necessary.

Also: Our Playaway customers can now check out five adult titles at a time. Children may check out three instead of just one. For those of you who aren’t sure what a Playaway is, it’s a book that has been recorded onto a little MP3 player. They are in orange cases, and they are located either upstairs or in the youth department. And now, for housekeeping: A fond farewell

Longtime employee Sandy Johnston is leaving the library as a paid employee Oct. 11. However, she plans to stick around and help the Friends of the Library and do whatever else she can to further the mission of the library.

Sandy has performed in many roles here, and we’ve come to rely on her common sense and knowledge about how everything works here. It’s a good thing she’ll still be in the neighborhood so that we can easily track her down and ask for her insight.

Library hours

We will be closed on Oct. 14 in observance of Columbus Day, reopening at 9 a.m. Tuesday. We also will close one hour earlier, at 3 p.m., on Oct. 26, so that the Parks and Recreation Department can set up the city’s annual “Boerne Boo” on the City Campus.
