Family recalls officer on tragic date

Oct. 2 marked the 25th anniversary of the shooting death of Kendall County Sheriff’s Deputy Larry Kolb, the department’s most recent loss due to gunfire.

It was Oct. 2, 1999, when Lt. Kolb was shot and killed, ambushed after responding to a “shots fired” call in the Shady Rest Mobile Home Park near Boerne.

The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office website tells that Kolb was heading home after completion of his shift when he responded to the call, being the closest deputy to the scene.

As he was approaching the residence, Kolb identified himself as a deputy and was then shot in the neck and chest by the suspect, who was using an AK-47. Deputy Kolb was not wearing a bulletproof vest.

Other officers who then arrived on the scene found the suspect hiding under a trailer. The suspect fired at them as well, but was killed when the officers returned fire.

Tom Kelley, Kolb’s brother- in-law, wants others to remember the 12 years of service Kolb provided to residents of Kendall County, Lago Vista, where he was with the city police department, and for students and faculty at Austin Independent School District.

“Lt. Kolb was very proud of serving and protecting the citizens of Kendall County and his family has endured his sacrifice for many years,” said Kelley, who is married to Kolb’s sister, Sherlynn. “Never take for granted those that offer their lives and sacrifices their families make so they can protect and serve.”

Kelley recalled the funeral procession that departed Boerne along Interstate 10 and stretched for nearly 10 miles, including police vehicles from all over Texas and neighboring states, state law enforcement officials, family and friends.

“We think about the sacrifice made by so many officers across this country daily,” Kelley added.

The Kelleys attended the May 15 Kendall County Law Enforcement Memorial ceremony at the Kendall County Law Enforcement Center.
