0-2
in district after tough loss to Seguin
Boerne Champion will take this Friday off and won’t play again until Oct. 11 when they travel to New Braunfels to take on the Unicorns.
The Chargers can use that extra week to recover physically from a shootout they were involved in against Seguin.
Champion and Seguin combined for 139 points and 19 touchdowns as it went from a football game that turned into a track meet that resulted in a basketball score of 73-66.
After winning three straight, the Chargers have dropped their last two, but more importantly, those two defeats are district losses and it leaves Champion at 0-2 in 13-5A DI.
The Chargers still have five games left in district and can make the playoffs but they have a tough road ahead. They still have Wagner, Pieper and New Braunfels on the schedule, along with Victoria East and MacArthur.
Champion can’t afford too many more losses if they are going to finish in the top 4 and make the playoffs.
Last Friday’s game started at a scorching pace and never really let up as both teams scored touchdowns in all four quarters.
Champion was up 28-16 at the end of one and then the teams combined for three touchdowns apiece in the second to give the Chargers a 52-37 advantage at the break.
Usually a 52-37 score is good for an entire game but there were still plenty of fireworks to come.
The Matadors tacked on five second half TDs, while Champion’s offense was slowed down just enough and they had to punt three times in the third quarter and that was the difference.
Seguin tied it in the third and took their first lead at 59-52 late in the quarter. The Chargers tied it at 59-59, but the Matadors pulled ahead, 66-59.
Champion tied it one more time after a Seguin turnover and it was 66-66 with 3:15 left in the game but the Matadors pulled ahead for good with a Corey Daily run and it was 73-66 with 1:05 on the clock.
After the ensuing kickoff, the Chargers moved the ball to midfield and eventually got it to the Seguin 35 with 16 seconds left but couldn’t convert a Hail Mary pass into the end zone at the buzzer.
Dailey finished with 8 passing and one rushing TD, while Ian Moreno added two rushing scores for Seguin and Nik Henry caught three touchdown passes.
Julian Navarrete tossed 6 TD passes for the Chargers, two apiece to William Burgess, Zachary Lopez and Brogan Dempsey, while Zachary Garcia, Garland Whitehead and Brady Smith all ran for touchdowns.
