Boerne High opened district play last week and suffered a 35-28 loss to Alamo Heights, it’s first district setback since 2019.
The Mules haven’t dropped a district game since 2019 and keep the streak going to stand at 1-0 in 13-5A DII, while the Greyhounds are 0-1.
Boerne is 2-3 overall and is off this Friday before hosting Harlandale, Oct. 11.
After Harlandale, BHS has Victoria West, Veterans Memorial, McCollum and Kerrville Tivy left on the schedule.
While there will be some challenging games ahead, last Friday’s contest was probably the most difficult against the No. 3 ranked team in the state in 5A DII and the Greyhounds almost pulled off the upset.
Boerne scored first in the game and it was back and forth for the rest of the first half. Last Friday’s contest was tied at 21-21 by halftime as the Greyhounds gave the Mules all they could handle.
However, the Mules started to pull away in the second half and opened up a 35-21 advantage with 7:46 left in the contest on a touchdown run by Trip Johnson.
BHS tried to rally and Ivan Perez cut into the lead with a 1-yard touchdown run and it was 35-28 but with only 1:17 left in the contest. Boerne tried an onside kick and it was recovered by the Mules team that went on to run out the clock.
Boerne turned in some good numbers from the game. Hank Hendrix went 20 for 31 through the air for 280 yards with 2 TDs and one interception.
Matthew Garrison led the Boerne receivers with 6 catches for 87 yards and 2 touchdowns, Eli Nikolas also snagged 6 catches for 63 yards, Brooks Perez netted 76 yards on 4 receptions, Hutson Hendrix hauled in 2 catches for 12 yards, while Walker Hill had a 14-yard snag and Ben Bays made a grab of 28 yards.
The Greyhounds run game was slowed down just a bit and didn’t reach the 100-yard mark for the first time in a game this season.
Boerne finished with 89 yards on 27 carries after Ivan Perez and Jeffrey Morrison both carried the rock 10 times apiece and Perez had 23 yards and two rushing TDs, while Morrison led the ground game with 64 yards.
Adam Hicks made his return after missing a few games with an injury and had two carries for 13 yards.
Braden Bays and Ryan Hooper led the defense with 9 tackles each, Hutson Hendrix added 8 tackles, while Brooks Perez came up with an interception for the defense.
