Chargers close out first round of district tied for second

Boerne Champion closed out the first round of district volleyball action Friday night with a three-game sweep of Kerrville Tivy.

The Lady Chargers defeated the Lady Antlers in Boerne, 25-19, 25-21, 25-14.

Champion is 27-6 overall and 6-2 in district. They began the second round of district Tuesday at Veterans Memorial and then host Smithson Valley Friday in a key matchup.

The Chargers beat Smithson Valley in the first round of district but the Rangers turned around and defeated New Braunfels, a team that beat Champion.

That basically puts those three team – Champion, Smithson Valley and New Braunfels – tied for second at 6-2, behind front runner Pieper, which is 8-0.

After a one-game absence, Ella Coleman returned Friday and led the team in kills with a dozen, Cassidy Breuer and Taylor Fenton added 6 kills apiece, Briley Wolff had 5 kills and Brielle Boothe turned in 4 kills.

Azteca Crawford, Coleman and Breuer all dropped in an ace, Fenton came up with 4 blocks and Wolff tallied 3 blocks.

Crawford led the team in digs with 11 and assists with 27, while Coleman finished with 10 digs.
