Comeback bid comes up short for Boerne

Comeback bid comes up short for Boerne

Boerne was handed its first district loss since 2019 by Alamo Heights Friday at Alamo Stadium - a 35-28 defeat.

The Greyhounds gave up 14 points in the third and fourth quarter combined to lose its first district game since a 23-9 defeat to Gonzales on Nov. 7, 2019.

With the game tied at 21 in the third quarter, Alamo Heights blew up the scoreboard with a 22-yard touchdown run at the 3:28 mark by running back D.K. Garza, who earlier in the play recovered a botched snap by the Mules to run for the score.

Following the play, the Greyhounds were handed an unsportsmanlike penalty that was enforced on the ensuing kickoff.

The Mules’ Ryan Stetson picked off a quarterback Hank Hendrix pass at the 30-second mark in the third quarter, preventing Boerne from knotting up the score.

Alamo Heights bolstered its score to 35-21 in the fourth quarter on a 34-yard touchdown run by Trip Johnson at the 7:46 mark.

The Greyhounds attempted to forge a late rally and scored on an Ivan Perez 1-yard romp at the 1:17 mark to narrow the deficit to seven.

Boerne attempted an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff with hopes of securing the ball, but the Mules recovered the kick and ran out the clock on its way to its fifth straight victory and a 5-0 record.

The Greyhounds’ loss marks its second in a row following a 52-49 loss to East Central on Sept. 20, bringing their overall record to 2-3. Boerne has not notched a win against Alamo Heights since 2005, with the Mules owning the head-to-head matchup at 15-6.

The Greyhounds will look to snap their woes and get back on the winning track when they play against Harlandale on Oct. 11.
