Boerne Champion’s comeback against San Angelo Central in Mason last Saturday came up just short in tennis.
The Chargers were down 5-2 after doubles play. It could have been much closer after doubles but the San Angelo school was able to take two boys doubles matches in third-set tiebreakers.
In both cases, the Chargers were up 9-3 and just needed one more point to get either win, but Central was able to take both those matches and held a 5-2 lead going into singles play.
Once in singles, the Chargers got on a roll and won seven straight matches and were up 9-5, and needed just one more victory to clinch it, but couldn’t win another match and dropped the contest, 10-9.
Saturday’s loss keeps Champion’s coach Joey Cantu at 399 career wins, but the Chargers had another chance to get their coach his 400th career victory when they hosted Wagner Tuesday at the BHS courts.
The Chargers were 6-5 overall (4-1 in district) entering the contest.
