After a weekend off, the Boerne Champion cross country teams raced at the Hays CISD XC Invitational last Saturday in San Marcos.
It was a strong showing by the Chargers varsity teams after the boys took first and the girls were second.
Champion is scheduled to run at the McNeil Invitational this Saturday in Round Rock at Old Settlers Park, site of the annual state cross-country meet.
Varsity Boys
The Charger boys tallied 70 points to beat second- place Austin Bowie (89) and thirdplace Eagle Pass (94) for the title in a field of 26 teams.
Champion had two in the top 10 after Charlie Houck placed fourth with a 15:42 and Luis Tovar recorded a 15:59 for ninth.
Caleb Dehart finished in 16:16 for 14th, Shawn Edwards came in 19th in 16:32, Mason Nelson posted a 16:38 for 24th, William Coover was 40th in 17:00 and Brandon Martinez rounded out the team after he registered a 17:11 for 53rd.
Varsity Girls
Champion was without its defending state champion Elizabeth Leachman, but still finished second with 79 points behind race- winner Smithson Valley, which won the race with 67 points.
NB Canyon was third with 147 points in the field of 21 teams.
The Lady Chargers did a great job of pack running and had its top four athletes finish within eight seconds of each other.
Payton Baldwin was Champion’s top runner after she was 12th in 19:19, Rebecca Bezerra came in 14th in 19:22, Kynley Albright finished one spot back in 15th at 19:25, while Luciana Zazueta Ibarra came in 18th at 19:27, while Addison Graham was two spots behind Zazueta Ibarra in 20th at 19:37.
Madison Mungia posted a 20:17 for 39th and Brenna Hempton placed 64th in a time of 21:05.
