Hornets hold off furious Greyhound comeback

The Greyhounds closed out non-district play with a shootout against the visiting East Central Hornets.

The 6,107 fans who attended Friday’s homecoming game saw the teams combine for 101 total points.

East Central built a big lead but the Greyhounds mounted a comeback that came up just short as the Hornets held on for a 52-49 victory.

The teams combined for 35 points in the fourth quarter with the Greyhounds scoring 21 of those points as they showed a never-say-die attitude.

Boerne concludes non-district at 2-2 and begins district play Friday at Alamo Heights in a matchup featuring the two league favorites.

The Greyhounds took an early lead Friday after Jeff Morrison ran it in from 8 yards out for the 7-0 advantage less than three minutes in.

Morrison’s TD run was set up by the defense after East Central fumbled on a Greyhound punt and it was recovered by Drew Coronado. BHS took over at the EC 20 and punched it in four plays later.

The Boerne lead didn’t hold, and in fact, it would be their only one of the game.

The Hornets answered with two Isaiah Mackey to Joseph Kelley touchdown passes and went up 14-7 by the end of the quarter.

BHS tied it early in the second after the Greyhounds received a fortunate bounce on an offensive fumble. Matthew Garrison caught a Hank Hendrix pass and was heading toward the end zone, but was stripped of the ball.

It took a Boerne bounce and ended up in the hands of Ben Bays, who picked it up and ran it in to make it 14-14 early in the second after the Diego Jimenez PAT.

Mackey entered the game with a lot of hype surrounding him but lived up to the billing as the Hornets QB led his team on three scoring drives before the half.

Mackey ran it in for a touchdown and then helped set up the team for a successful 27-yard field goal. Mackey later dashed into the end zone on a 5-yard run 1:03 before halftime and the Hornets were up 31-14 and had scored on 5 of their 6 firsthalf possessions.

But to Boerne’s credit, the Greyhounds answered right before the half. Hank Hendrix found his brother Hutson Hendrix on a short pass with 13 ticks on the clock before halftime and it was 31-21 at the break.

After the homecoming festivities, the Hounds scored on their first possession of the third quarter. BHS went on a 13-play, 81-yard drive that chewed 5:48 off the clock.

The Greyhounds capped it when the Hendrix brothers connected again on a short TD pass and the lead was down to 31-28.

East Central fired back with three touchdowns before Boerne could get on the board again. Mackey tossed two more TDs and ran in another to make it 52-28 early in the fourth quarter as he tossed for four touchdowns and ran for three more.

Again, the Greyhounds refused to go down without a fight and cut it to three points before it was over.

Hank Hendrix ran it in for a score, Garrison hauled in a short pass from Hendrix and then Hendrix found Brooks Perez in the back of the end zone and it was 52-49, but with only 29 seconds left.

Braden Bays and Bobby Jett Wilkinson both recovered fumbles in that fourth quarter that helped to set up two of the Boerne touchdowns.

BHS tried an onside kick but it was recovered by the Hornets, who managed to kill the clock.
