Comfort travels to Johnson City

Comfort played its second game of the year last Friday and Bobcats coach Jay Rieken said he saw a lot of improvement from their Game 1 setback to Dilley.

Last Friday, Comfort hosted Ingram and won, 34-29.

The Bobcats are hoping to ride that momentum into this Friday when they visit Johnson City. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Rieken said they looked a lot better in their second game, as opposed to the first.

“I knew we were going to be better; we saw a lot of improvement. We got better,” he said. “We still shot ourselves in the foot a few times but I couldn’t ask for a better all-around effort.”

Rieken said they need to take care of the ball better. The Bobcats fumbled inside Ingram’s 10-yard line once and inside the Warriors 5-yard line twice.

If Comfort scores on any of those three possessions, the game is probably over a lot quicker.

“We also had a kickoff return called back,” Rieken said. “I’m proud of the kids and coaching staff. It was a good win but there’s still some stuff to clean up.”

Comfort’s Topper Sterling ran for 317 yards and 4 touchdowns. All four TDs came in the first half and the first touchdown run went for 94 yards in the first quarter.

Rieken said he didn’t plan to keep feeding Sterling, but noted that Ingram’s defensive alignment opened up the door for the junior RB to have a good game.

“I’m not trying to get somebody carries, I’m just trying to move the ball,” he said. “That’s just what the defense was giving us.”

Three of Sterling’s rushing TDs came in the second quarter and helped the ’Cats outscore the Warriors in the period, 21-10.

“It started clicking late in the first,” Rieken said. “They kept punting to us because our defense did a great job of slowing them down.”

Comfort took a 27-23 lead into halftime and never trailed after that. The Bobcat defense helped in the third when Damian Neri picked up a fumble and returned it 38 yards for a score to open up a 34-23 lead.

“Diego Lozano jarred it loose and Damian Neri picked it up for a scoop and score,” Rieken said.

Comfort rolled to almost 500 yards of offense and tallied 474 total yards in the game.

Johnson City is 2-1 and has defeated Granger and Sonora, with a loss to Miles. Last year, they walloped the Bobcats, 58-20 in the season opener. Rieken said they’re good.

“They throttled us pretty good last year and are a senior-heavy ball club,” he said. “They’re well coached and they don’t shoot themselves in the foot during a game.”

Rieken said they need to continue improving on the little things.

“We have to stop penalties and turnovers, we have to hold on to the ball and penalties have been big,” he said. “And we have to tackle a little better.”
