After two games at home, the Geneva School of Boerne football team had its first road game of the season Friday when the Eagles visited Sabinal.
It was back-and-forth between the Eagles and Yellowjackets as the teams kept exchanging the lead until the very end.
Sabinal took a late lead but the Eagles answered with 1:19 left for the 11th tie or lead change and Geneva held on for the 42-37 victory.
Geneva is 2-1 overall and Sabinal slips to 0-3. The Eagles are at KIPP Sunnyside Friday.
In last Friday’s contest, Sabinal took the early advantage on a 14-yard run in the first quarter but missed the extra point and the Eagles were down 6-0.
Parker Eiland put Geneva on the board with a 32-yard field goal to slice the lead to 6-3 just two minutes later.
The Eagles took the lead in the second quarter when Caleb Quitadamo tossed a 1-yard TD pass to Brady Chandler and Geneva was up 9-6 after they missed the extra point with 4 minutes left until the break.
The Yellowjackets tallied the final score before halftime after they found the end zone on a 15-yard run just 43 ticks until intermission.
Sabinal went for two and converted and took a 14-9 edge into halftime.
Geneva answered right away and scored just two minutes into the third quarter after Quitadamo aired it out 32 yards to Reid Aderholt to put the Eagles up, 15-14.
Geneva added to its lead later in the quarter after Quitadamo went to the air for another score. The Eagles QB found Chandler again and Geneva held a 22-14 advantage after Eiland booted the extra point.
But Sabinal tied it with a short run after they hit a 65-yard pass to set up deep in Eagles territory.
The Yellowjackets punched it in from the 1-yard line and it was 22- 22 after another successful two- point conversion.
The Eagles answered and pulled ahead later in the third quarter after Reid Wilson scrambled in from the 4-yard line and the kick was good and Geneva was up 29-22.
But once again, the Yellowjackets tied it. A two-yard TD run to start the fourth quarter made it 29-29 after the Yellowjackets kicked their extra point.
Bryce Hanover took over at the QB spot for Geneva after Quitadamo left with an injury. Hanover looked sharp after he tossed an 11-yard score to Chandler to put Geneva up 36-29 after the Eiland kick with 9:30 remaining.
Sabinal was able to respond but it was their last gasp. A 9-yard touchdown run and a two-point try put the Yellowjackets on top, 37-36, with 4:30 remaining, but the Eagles proved they had one more drive left in them.
With 1:19 left in the game, Reid Wilson punched it in for the Eagles. They went for two points and didn’t convert but still held a 42-37 advantage.
Geneva’s defense then held off the Yellowjackets in the final minute to seal the win.
