The severed leg of a man killed by a passing motorist on eastbound Interstate 10 in north Boerne on March 22 turned up about 43 miles away in Cibolo after it dropped off a tractor-trailer rig, officials confirmed.
Chris Shadrock, communications director for the city of Boerne, told The Star late Monday that local investigators “positively identified the body part belonged to Mr. (Jeremy) McGee.”
The incident is the latest development in a tragedy that began shortly before 7 a.m. March 22 on a darkened stretch of the busy interstate.
At about 6:50 a.m., investigators believe McGee, of Kerrville, pulled his Republic Services commercial vehicle over on the shoulder of the interstate, and he got out to check on the trash bins he was hauling. Reports stated a woman driving a black SUV struck McGee on the highway, killing him.
While the Boerne Police Department continues to investigate the incident, Shadrock said officials believe “McGee might have been checking on the items he was hauling and may have inadvertently stepped out onto the main interstate lanes.”
“Upon Mr. McGee being struck by the vehicle, his foot somehow ended up lodged onto the vehicle and fell off in the community of Cibolo,” Shadrock said. “Working with our partners at the Cibolo Police Department, by the next day our investigators positively identified the body part belonged to Mr. McGee before his burial.”
The Seguin Gazette was the first to report the leg’s discovery in an online story April 2, or 11 days after the body part was found.
According to the Gazette, a motorist on March 22 discovered the severed leg on the highway hours after the initial accident. Cibolo police were called, and its probe led back to the Boernearea fatality earlier in the day.The leg was turned over to Boerne police.
“The leg that was found at the 13700 block of IH-10 West is related to the fatality accident that occurred (recently) on Interstate 10 in Boerne,” Shadrock told The Gazette. “Investigators currently believe that when the victim in that accident was initially hit by a black SUV, a part of his body was actually picked up by an 18-wheeler directly behind that driver.”
When the mishap originally occurred, investigators found McGee’s truck stopped on the right shoulder of the interstate, according to Boerne police. The headlights were on and a right-side blinker were on. However, the emergency flashers were not activated.
“At this time, the investigation continues to show that the driver of the SUV did not strike the truck,” information from BPD stated at the time. “There was no damage to the commercial truck and the damage to the SUV was consistent with the impact from Mr. McGee.”
According to information from the Boerne PD, the driver who struck McGee immediately pulled over and remained on the scene until officers arrived shortly thereafter. No charges are expected.
