Greyhounds visit Castroville Friday to take on Panthers

After a road trip to Boerne ISD Stadium to take on Boerne Champion last Friday, Medina Valley is home this week to play the other BISD football team – Boerne High.

The Panthers host the Greyhounds Friday in Castroville, 7 p.m. Medina Valley is 0-2 and put a scare in the Chargers after Champion went up 21-0 but the Panthers rallied and made it 31-28 midway through the fourth quarter before Champion scored the final 10 points and came up with two interceptions, all in the final six minutes.

Medina Valley finished with five turnovers in the game and it’s what helped the Chargers build their early lead. BHS coach Che Hendrix said he was impressed with what he saw of the Panthers.

“It’s an interesting game if they don’t turn it over five times. They’re big and physical,” he said. “They run that triple option and are good on both sides of the ball.”

One Panthers player that is pretty good on offense is running back is Jason Zendejas, who finished with 156 ground yards on 32 carries.

Zendejas didn’t score in the game but he was the workhorse and helped Medina Valley move the ball up and down the field.

“He’s a big fullback, so it’s critical to hit him early,” Hendrix said. “The worst thing is to give him a head of steam. If he gets past the first level it’ll be tough to bring him down. We have to hit him early in the play.” Boerne is 1-1 and coming off a 28-21 win over Laredo United.

Similar to the Medina Valley – Champion game, the Greyhounds were up 21-0 before things got interesting.

After falling behind 21-0, the Longhorns made a game of it and outscored Boerne after that, 21-7, but the Hounds held off the Horns.

A couple of miscues hurt the Hounds, but Hendrix said they had such a good start that they were able to overcome a strong second half by Laredo United.

“I felt like we played well on the field, we played fantastic. We just have to put together four consistent quarters and keep playing our way into game-shape,” the coach said. “We need to stop pre-snap penalties, protect the football and continue to communicate a little better. Overall, I’m happy with a lot of things.”

Boerne’s defense came up with some key stops against the Longhorns and put pressure on United QB Louie Solis.

Blake Burkholder and Braden Bays combined for five sacks, while Ryan Opielski added another sack for six total in the game.

Hutson Hendrix finished with 12 tackles and Burkholder had 8 total stops, while Jake Perez intercepted two passes.

Offensively, Adam Hicks had a rushing TD but left the game with an injury with 35 ground yards and a touchdown on 9 totes. Coach Hendrix said he hopes to have him back soon.

Ivan Perez was the primary back after that and led the Hounds in rushing with 62 yards on 17 carries.

Hank Hendrix went 22 for 30 through the air for 281 yards and 3 TDs, to go with one pick. He completed passes to eight different receivers and found Ben Bays, Eli Nikolas and Hutson Hendrix for touchdowns.

Brooks Perez led the team in receiving yards with 59, while Nikolas and Will Traylor both finished with 58 receiving yards.

“We have to continue to improve,” Coach Hendrix said.
