A young Geneva School of Boerne football team will be leaving the confines of home this Friday and plays its first road game of the regular season.
The Eagles visit Sabinal Friday, 7:30 p.m.
While it may be Geneva’s first road game of the 2024 season, Eagles coach Grant Gaston points out that they did travel to Austin twice for scrimmages against Hyde Park and Brentwood.
“Fortunately, our two scrimmages were on the road this year so we have a little bit of experience getting on the bus and heading to unfamiliar territory,” he said. “In a lot of ways I think it is easier to focus on the road since there are fewer distractions.”
Geneva enters the contest at 1-1, while Sabinal is 0-2 after lopsided losses to Dilley (46-0) and Harper (57-14).
Gaston noted that both Sabinal losses have come on the road and the Yellowjackets will be at home this Friday and want to get back on track before the home crowd.
“Sabinal is always a very well coached team. They are much, much better than their record would indicate. They get their first home game of the season and will be gunning to make a statement,” he said. “They are capable of scoring in bunches and their defense is sound. Similar to San Antonio Christian, we expect this to be a difficult, hard-fought, back-andforth type of game.”
Geneva is coming off its first win of the year after they defeated La Pryor 42-6 last Friday at home. They hosted SACS the week before and lost 37-28.
The Eagles are young and start a lot of freshmen sophomores and Gaston said they are making big strides.
“We’re pleased with how our young guys are progressing and contributing. Sophomore Koen Huebner led the team in tackles against La Pryor; freshman Ian Jayroe played well on both sides of the ball and freshman Chase Doran is starting at wide receiver,” he said. “Sophomores Caleb Quitadamo, Reid Aderholt and Bryce Hanover are all big players for us. The more they play the better they will get.”
Quitadamo is the starting QB and has thrown for 633 yards and 8 TDs in two games, against 2 interceptions. He’s also run for 70 total yards and a score.
“’Q’ is right where we thought he would be,” the coach said. “He is a dualthreat quarterback, and is a team leader already.”
Like every other team around the state, the Eagles are looking for consistency and Gaston said they’re working on it.
“Consistency is the key and playing to our standard of football,” he said. “We need to make sure we do not play down or up to anyone - but play at our highest level all the time.”
