Lady Chargers win Matador Volleyball Classic in Seguin

The Boerne Champion volleyball team closed out regular-season tournament play by taking first place at the Matador Classic in Seguin.

Champion went 5-1 in pool play and then closed it out with a 3-0 performance on the final day to wrap up first place.

The Lady Chargers went 8-1 at the tourney and stand at 21-4 overall. Champion continued district action Tuesday at Smithson Valley and will play their next five matches on the road. They aren’t home until Sept. 24 when they host Wagner.

Ella Coleman and Azteca Crawford both were named to the All-Tournament team in Kerrville, while Crawford was also recognized after reaching 1,000 career assists.

On the first day of the tournament, the Chargers went 3-0. They dumped Del Rio, 25-12, 25-14; topped Taft, 25-15, 25-11, and then locked up Lockhart, 25-10, 25-15.

On the second day of the tourney, Champion sacked South San, 25-11, 25-18; clubbed Canyon Lake 25-11, 25-11, and dropped their only match of the event after they fell to Marshall after suffering an injury, 25-23, 14-25, 25-19.

On the final day, the Lady Chargers mauled Medina Valley, 25-15, 25-23; they tied up the Tigers from Floresville in the semifinals, 25-13, 25-18, to advance to the finals.

In the championship match, Champion took down Gregory Portland to win the title, 25-20, 25-8.
