Eagles are looking for their first win

The Geneva School of Boerne is home for the second week in a row and is still looking for its first victory of the season.

Geneva hosts La Pryor Friday in Boerne, 7 p.m.

The Eagles were home last week and fell to San Antonio Christian, 37-28.

La Pryor recorded a 34-0 victory over Bruni.

Geneva had a 3-point lead in the fourth quarter vs. SACS, but the Lions went on to score 20 points in the final stanza to get the win.

Eagles head coach Grant Gaston said the Lions’ depth showed in the end.

“It was more a numbers game, we have fewer numbers and our guys got tired,” he said. “It wasn’t because they’re out of shape, they just had to play a lot of minutes. We knew SAC would be a tough opponent, they’re bigger and more experienced.”

Gaston said he feels that every game will help his squad gain experience.

“We’re such a young team and we’ve gotten better each week, but there are things we need to clear up,” he said. “I’m pleased with what we’re seeing, we have a lot of youth and made mistakes, but we’re going to be good. We’re gelling as a team and doing well; we’ll be better at the end of the season.”

Caleb Quitadamo made his first start as a QB and went 22 for 42 through the air for 365 yards and four touchdowns to go with an interception.

Junior Brady Chandler caught seven balls for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Chandler also caught two 2-point conversions. Reid Aderholt and Wyatt Bruss each added a touchdown of their own.

The Eagles will want to bolster their run game after they only finished with 54 total yards on the ground in 19 carries.

Gaston said La Pryor looked good in their opener despite a change at the top. They Bulldogs are a UIL 2A-DII school.

“They have a new coach and they’re a little more spread this year,” he said. “They’re not quite the Wing T like they were last year. They run the ball and run it well out of three receiver sets.”

The Bulldogs missed the playoffs last year after they went 1-5 in district and 2-8 overall, while Geneva went two rounds deep in the TAPPS postseason.
