Greyhounds get first crack at 6A football team

Boerne High will celebrate 100 years of Greyhound football Thursday night at Boerne ISD Stadium.

As they celebrate reaching the century mark on the gridiron, this year’s BHS football team will add to their history as they play their first game against a 6A program.

Boerne hosts 6A Laredo United in their home opener Thursday at 7 p.m.

The Longhorns are coming off a 10-3 season where they went three rounds deep before being defeated by Westlake.

The Longhorns are picked to win District 30-6A and Boerne coach Che Hendrix said the Laredo school is solid and has a potent passing game.

“They’re a good program, they throw the ball well,” he said. “They’re a true spread offense and they use a lot of quick throws but will throw it deep on you. They have a very efficient passing game.”

Laredo United is coming off a 14-6 win over Warren, while the Greyhounds dropped their opener to Pieper, 38-36.

Boerne’s game with Pieper was decided by a few plays and could have gone either way. There were a few breaks that went against the Greyhounds, especially a fumble recovery that was overturned with Boerne ahead 34-25 because of an inadvertent whistle.

If the Hounds had been awarded the ball, they would have had possession inside the Pieper 10-yard line and might have had a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter, which would have changed the complexion of the game.

Coach Hendrix said after looking at game film, they should have been awarded the ball. There was also a horse collar on Boerne QB Hank Hendrix that wasn’t called that would have given BHS a first down at midfield in the second half, but Coach Hendrix added that those are the breaks.

“ We played well enough to win and had a few unlucky breaks, but it was a fun atmosphere and there were a lot of positives,” he said. “We’re moving on from it and not going to dwell on it.”

The Hounds tallied 403 yards against the Warriors from scrimmage and had more plays (73-53) and first downs (20-19) than their opponent.

Coach Hendrix said they need to cut back on penalties. They were flagged 11 times, compared to 3 for Pieper.

This will be Boerne’s second game in a row on Thursday, but Hendrix said it’s no big deal and actually kind of likes it.

“We lift, (look at) film and look ahead on Friday and it gives them the weekend off,” he said. “It’s kind of nice.”
