A 79-year-old woman remains in stable but critical condition Tuesday in University Hospital, injured in the collapse Saturday of a section of bleacher seating at the Kendall County Fair.
Spectators were enjoying Pro Rodeo performers when steel supports underneath a section of bleachers, to the right of the grandstand, gave way at about 9:15 p.m., sending patrons tumbling to the ground beneath the seating.
Chaos ensued as fairgoers rushed to aid the victims and lift the steel girders free of those trapped underneath.
The hospitalized woman, whose name family members requested to be shielded, was in the ICU at University Hospital in San Antonio. Her injuries include 12 broken ribs, a broken clavicle, a broken sternum and a severe concussion with brain bleed, which has been stabilized.
“Her organs are bruised and right now she is fighting to hold her own,” a family spokeswoman said.
The family declined further comment except to “ask for a flood of prayers for a complete healing to lift up our mom.”
She was seated atop the bleachers in a Kendall County Fair Association VIP section, where tables and stools were arranged on level surface fair association members and guests. Two individuals she was seated with were transported to hospitals but later released.
