Twelve people were injured Saturday when a portion of seating in the Kendall County Fairgrounds rodeo arena collapsed.
City officials said eight people were transported to area hospitals, while four were treated at the scene with lesser injuries. No updates on their conditions were available Saturday evening.
The incident occurred at 9:17 p.m. at the rodeo arena, on the third day of its annual four-day pre-Labor Day run. Saturday’s schedule showed musician Bailey Rae performing at 8 p.m., with the pro rodeo under way as of 8 p.m.
The fair was closed, and patrons were escorted away from the area of the collapse and off the grounds. A 10 p.m. performance by Coffey Anderson was cancelled.
The Boerne Fire Marshal’s Office and Permitting and Code Compliance Office will inspect the rodeo grounds Sunday morning to ensure the public’s safety before the fair will be allowed to continue.
The collapse area will be off limits until officials determine if the seating section can be repaired or removed.
Several local agencies, including Kendall County Emergency Management, Kendall County EMS, the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office and the Boerne Police Department responded. Additionally, ambulances with the local MEDCOM responded to provide additional support.
Attempts to reach fair officials by phone Saturday were unsuccessful.
The investigation into the cause is ongoing. City officials said more information will be released as it becomes available.
