WRITE OF CENTER
The Kendall County Republican Party Thursday held its annual Lincoln Regan Dinner. U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) was our keynote speaker along with special guest U.S. Congressman Chip Roy. The event was emceed by Texas Comptroller Glen Hager. Several state elected officials were present, including Sen. Donna Campbell (R-New Braunfels) and state Rep. Ellen Troxclair (R-Lakeway). We held it at a sold-out crowd of 375 at the Bevy Hotel.
The dinner is primarily a fundraiser to provide scholarships, fund operating expenses and GOTV efforts. However, it became much more than that. The atmosphere was electric. It was a night that epitomized why I am a Republican. Let me explain.
You see I was a Democrat growing up. My grandmother was an FDR Democrat. She and her 12 brothers and sisters were a family of Italian immigrants growing up in the Great Depression.
We were raised to believe the Democratic Party saved us. It was the party of “the working man.”
The party believed that every person deserved a chance at the American Dream. It did not matter about the color of your skin, your religion or your gender.
We believed the government was not there to provide for us but to give a helping hand when it was needed.
The Republican Party was seen as the party of big business, the party that only cared about the rich.
Skip forward 30 years. My beliefs have not changed that much. I taught my kids what I was taught. Hard work, faith and perseverance were the keys to success no matter who you were or what you looked like.
But I find myself the Chair of the Kendall County Republican Party and committeeman on the State Republican Executive Committee.
What happened? I never left the Democrat Party. It left me.
I am not alone in this transformation. This past week Robert F. Kennedy Jr. endorsed Donald Trump for president. Tulsi Gabbard, who ran for the Democrat presidential nomination in 2000 and was vice chair of the DNC, endorsed Trump. Elon Musk is contributing $45 million per month over the next four months to help Trump get elected. They have joined a long list of others who believe we are in a fight to save what our Founding Fathers started.
On a recent podcast I heard RFK Jr. explain in the late 1700’s when the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution were written, we were the world’s first Democracy; a country for the people and ruled by the people. By the mid-1800s there were a handful more that joined us. We became the blueprint for democracy.
The world looks to us on how to govern. The world looks to us for leadership.
This past week, Mark Zuckerberg sent a letter to Jim Jordan, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, explaining how his company, Meta, was pressured by the Biden-Harris administration to censor those who had differing views on COVID and to discredit the Hunter Biden laptop.
Of course, Meta complied. Censorship will destroy our nation if we let it.
Now back to last night. It was a room filled with shared beliefs and values. It was a room not filled with hate but love for our country and our way of life.
Twelve surrounding counties were represented, from Bexar to Travis, from Harris to Hays. We rallied together to begin the final push on our mission to save Texas and the United States this November.
The Kendall County Republican Party believes that we should be intricate to the fabric of our community. For us, it is not just about politics and getting people to vote for our candidates, it is about charity and helping others. (We helped raise over $15,000 for our Boerne Little League World Series team.)
It is about leadership. We have seen over the past four years what happens when you have poor leadership. I welcome any of you out there who may be on the fence or just not all that into politics, to join RFK Jr., Gabbard and Musk in our fight.
Your voice deserves to be heard, and our children are worth the fight.
Wheeler is Chair of the Kendall County Republican party.
